Nissan finally leaves Russia

It appears that Nissan’s Russian division has followed in the footsteps of Renault, which left the domestic market in the spring of 2022. The details of the actual nationalization of the Japanese automaker’s Russian assets are reported by the AvtoVzglyad portal.

All Russian assets of the Nissan car group, which is managed by Nissan Manufacturing Russia LLC, including the assembly plant in the Leningrad region, will become state property. The new owner has been appointed the Federal State Unit “Central Research Automotive and Automotive Institute NAMI” (FSUE NAMI). This was announced by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Under the agreement, Nissan has an option to buy back the transferred assets within six years. Recall that in the spring of this year the Renault group gave FSUE NAMI the controlling interest (67.7%) of AVTOVAZ that belonged to it, under exactly the same conditions. It is reported that the supply of spare parts of the brand to Russia and the after-sales service of Nissan cars will be carried out by the structures of AVTOVAZ. According to representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, about 2,000 employees of the Nissan plant will remain at work and the company itself “will remain operational”.

“On behalf of Nissan, I would like to thank our Russian colleagues for their contributions to the company over the years. While we cannot continue to operate in the market, we have found the best solution to support our people,” said Nissan President and CEO Makoto Uchida.

In addition, the company headquarters estimated its losses in exiting the Russian market at about 100 billion yen, which is equivalent to about 45 billion rubles.
