This document limits the number of spikes so that they do not spoil the road surface. The number of “claws” in tires produced since the beginning of 2016 should therefore not exceed 60 per linear meter of tread. That is, for a tire 235/60 R18, the profile length is 2 meters 32 centimeters. The maximum allowed number of spikes in it is 139 pieces. It turns out that if two or three take off during a sharp deceleration, it does not affect braking and handling in any way.

By the way, the number of studs in modern tire models has increased significantly. Therefore, the loss of even a dozen will not affect the behavior of the car either.

Of course, let’s not forget that only spikes on ice slow down. But there are very few roads with exceptionally bare ice. In the city, municipal services clean the roadway. And on country roads there is only a thin layer of ice. Therefore, it is better to pay attention to the condition of the protector, because he takes on most of the work. If the pattern has deep grooves and many sipes, such a tire will effectively remove snow and water slurry from the contact patch and effectively slow down on dry surfaces.

Keep in mind that if the tires have lost most of the spikes, the car will slow down faster on a hard surface. After all, the protector works, but the spikes do not interfere. That is, city dwellers absolutely do not have to worry about the torn “nails”. Without them, even better.
