In the near future, Hyundai’s Russian representative office may announce the company’s withdrawal from the domestic market. This is indicated by a characteristic fact: according to the AvtoVzglyad portal’s own data, the conservation of equipment has begun at the Russian Hyundai plant near St. Petersburg. In addition, all the remaining cars, both assembled and not fully equipped, were taken from the territory of the enterprise – about 1,500 units.
Another source of the AvtoVzglyad portal, which is directly related to the Russian Hyundai plant, did not confirm the information about the beginning of the conservation work at the company. According to him, no additional processes have recently started here. As for the removal of finished cars from the warehouse, according to him, such operations are carried out quite regularly, for example, in connection with the shipment of products to Russian dealers.
We asked for information about what is happening at the St. Petersburg plant at the Russian Hyundai headquarters. Its representatives have traditionally declined to comment on the press.
Note that in the summer it became known about mass layoffs at one of the main suppliers of the Hyundai St. Petersburg plant – Piterform LLC, a subsidiary of Canadian Magna.
Until recently, Piterform LLC was also the leading supplier of components for the Nissan assembly plant, also located in the Leningrad region. Nissan, as you know, has recently “waved the handle” at Russia. That said, a similar move can now be expected from Hyundai.
Recall that from the spring announcement of the suspension of their activities in Russia, the Koreans regularly, on the 27th-29th of each month, officially extended the operation of this way of existence of the company in our country. If in the end the rumors about the beginning of equipment conservation at the Hyundai plant in St. Petersburg turn out to be true, then already on October 27-28 it is possible not to wait for the announcement of the “extension of the suspension ”, but before the release dedicated to the departure of the Korean brand from Russia.
Remember that Hyundai is part of the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group and that Kia can automatically leave Russia after that. It should be noted that Korean automakers, unlike some of their European, American and Japanese counterparts, have taken the most neutral stance on working in the Russian market. It will be a shame if their attempt to “sit on the sidelines” of the acute phase of the confrontation between Russia and the West fails and they have to leave.
