It is possible that in the near future not only LADA cars, but also foreign cars will be assembled at AVTOVAZ sites in Togliatti or Izhevsk. The leadership of the domestic group is already negotiating possible cooperation with foreign car manufacturers, but specific brands have not yet been named.

The group’s chairman, Maxim Sokolov, told reporters that some foreign cars want to “dial in” AVTOVAZ. He noted that foreign manufacturers have been approached with a proposal to set up an SKD assembly of their machines, and a “negotiation process” is currently underway. The company is looking at “how beneficial it will be for AVTOVAZ and the Russian auto industry as a whole.”

It is true that Mr. Sokolov did not go into details. He didn’t mention specific brands, or even countries of potential partners. The timing is also unknown. One thing is certain: even if AVTOVAZ agrees with someone, the production launch will not happen soon, because this is not a fast process.

In general, a partnership with foreigners, who are willing to entrust AVTOVAZ SKD, would help, for example, to save the Izhevsk site, which lost its only model this year. Instead of Vesta, which is now “moving” to Togliatti, Udmurtia plans to start production of electric Largus. Maybe a “green” truck in the lineup for a change won’t hurt, but it’s unlikely it’ll just “take out” the plant on its own.
