The Great Wall party, known to our compatriots, probably believed that the best moment had arrived. Since Russia is running a special operation, it is logical to assume that cars under the Tank brand will be picked up like hot cakes by the population. However, the AvtoVzglyad portal had serious doubts about this.
At some point in its short history, Great Wall fell in love with the creation of sub-brands. She initially invented the ‘luxury’ Haval, but almost immediately threw it off the premium pedestal herself, as the cars clearly needed a thorough refinement, both in design and chassis. However, the prestigious niche of the Chinese manufacturer did not remain empty for long – in 2021 it was filled by another newly created brand – Tank. The logo in the form of a large letter “T” adorns only the radiator grilles of frame SUVs.
The honor of getting acquainted with the “tankers” fell first to the fate of Saudi Arabia. But the company’s ambitions were not initially limited to the Middle East. Expansion was also planned for the markets of Australia, Southeast Asia and Russia. In our country, the Chinese are going to sell two off-road vehicles – Tank 300 and Tank 500. And apparently they have high hopes for them.
Frankly, neither one nor the other wins with its exterior, although it is hard to blame designers: why should they strive for European refinement of forms, when Europeans themselves slide more and more into overt Asianism every year? The smaller one has a length of 4760 mm. It is equipped with a two-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 220 hp. Of. and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The second SUV – Tank 500 – is more impressive: 4878 mm long, a three-liter V6 biturbo of 299 hp under the hood, aggregated with a nine-speed “automatic”.
Both cars are smart representatives of the ruthless family of true SUVs. They have a frame and suspension with a solid rear axle and a ground clearance of 224 mm. Their arsenal also includes an electromagnetic clutch connecting the front axle, a reduction gear and locks for both differentials on the axles. In general, they are quite combative conquerors of virgin lands, although there are very good reasons to doubt that Russian drivers are waiting for them – they will not wait.
As the AvtoVzglyad portal has already written, it is naive to expect Chinese manufacturers to work hard for our benefit and fill the budget niche of the Russian car market. This is a tricky business, requiring large investments and yielding a moderate income. Our friends from the Celestial Empire are going to work exclusively for themselves, so their plans involve selling expensive cars, which bring in comparable profits with a much smaller scale of deliveries.
Pricing for the Tank 300 and Tank 500 has yet to be announced, but company representatives are stubbornly focusing on the premium nature of their offspring and clearly state that they will certainly not come cheap. For example, if we take the Haval H9, whose price tag starts at 4,099,000 rubles, its luxury counterpart Tank 500 can quite easily get close to 10 million, because the Chinese are almost comparing it to the Toyota Land Cruiser 300, which I believe In my opinion, an unlit look is priceless for any car from China.
It is unclear which specific category of buyers the Chinese are targeting. An expensive full-size luxury crossover can attract the attention of wealthy citizens. However, they definitely don’t need all these off-road devices that hinder handling and are completely useless on decent roads.
On the contrary, it is precisely these qualities that will be in demand in the outback, where there are problems with asphalt. But they won’t understand the space price tag, electronic assistants and chic interior trim, which in no way correlate with off-road dirt. Of course, before our eyes we have a brilliant example of combining the above incompatible parameters – the Mercedes G-class. However, the same Mercedes!
And the Tank brand has neither the charisma nor the advertising injections that allow the German concern to shamelessly defraud the gullible nouveau wealth. The prospects for a new brand in Russia are therefore hardly rosy.
