It is impossible to mix different motor oils, experienced drivers will say, and they will be right. Additives in precipitate, foam, emulsion and further down the list. But tell me, what to do when the “oiler” lights up on the dashboard far from home? A tow truck for the price of a car or a local “service” that will cause more problems than good? We take a risk and fill the engine with a different engine oil. What came out of our forced experiment, the AvtoVzglyad portal says.
A used car is always a lottery and with each new day the puzzles get more interesting. The Mitsubishi Lancer editors therefore do not tire of raising new questions, which often have to be answered in an extremely short time and in places that are completely unsuitable for it.
The battle to run out of engine oil has been going on for nearly a year. We managed to identify and fix most of the problems, but the grease is coming out little by little. And the engine itself, according to the factory documentation, burns 300 grams per thousand kilometers. Note, we are talking about a new unit, what can we say about our 18 year old “copy”!
The Mobil 5w40 canister in the trunk, filled for service, unfortunately turned out to be empty and there was very little oil left in the engine – at the end of the dipstick. At this rate, it can get stuck!
Our engine is, of course, noble and reliable – His Majesty 4G63, one of the best Mitsu engines in history – but it also needs lubrication. Yes, forgiving and monstrously reliable. Yes, much less forced than contemporaries and therefore more patient. However, it is also lost if there is no lubricant in the crankcase. And he isn’t.
Many oil brands, including Mobil, left Russia and therefore bought “the same”, in three out of four cases you can come across a fake. And the prices, to be honest, are far from acceptable: from 4600 rubles for 4 liters.
In our case, however, everything is even simpler: in the only available store, there is nothing that comes close to what is on sale. Not five thousand, not ten. What must we do? To the house, with its non-stop supermarkets and the largest assortment, 110 km. Take a chance? Don’t turn and drive quietly?
We choose another, more humane method: Mitsubishi Lancer is filled with synthetic motor oil with a viscosity of 5w40, so we buy a canister from the cheapest domestic with similar characteristics. And we fill it in the engine to the mark on the dipstick: exactly in the middle between “empty” and “closed”.
Let’s face it: Japanese engines – both ancient and modern – aren’t as good in terms of economy and ecology as European ones, but they will give those last one hundred points a head start in the “reliability” line. This is not only due to the quality of craftsmanship and technologies from a large resource, but also a low level of forcing. The more “tolerances”, the longer it takes.
Take advantage of this loophole, pour fat fat and go. For the sake of interest, we have set ourselves a goal: to check the results of our experience after 500 km. That is the experiment, the price of which can reach 170,000 rubles. The game was worth the candle: the indicated kilometers were flawless, domestic heating oil did not form dangerous chemical bonds with imported oil, no emulsions or other foam were found on the lid and the dipstick. The engine runs smoothly and quietly, no changes in handling characteristics have been noted.
In summary, we can safely say that if you are in a similar situation, you can and should take an oil from any manufacturer that is suitable for its characteristics, with the caveat: if synthetics are flooded, buy synthetics, if 5w40 is flooded, fill in the same. And take it easy.
Such a solution is many times better than finding the composition necessary for the engine in the dark and rushing on a dark suburban highway: every brand gas station sells engine oil with the correct parameters, which allows you to calmly and without serious problems for the engine to come home. And make a well-considered decision yourself: do maintenance or continue to use the car.
