A shabby body can be painted, but what to do with a worn interior? Plastic interior details “scream about age” much louder than armchairs, but they can and should be put in order, as plastic is an extremely easy-to-repair material. Here are several “recipes” available at once, taking the editorial Mitsubishi Lancer as an example.

Unfortunately, the days of new cars are a thing of the past: it is too expensive to ‘overhaul’ the family car fleet today and in three out of four cases the purchase will already be used. So scratches, chips and scuffs are now understandable. And, as practice has shown, solvable.

The editors Mitsubishi Lancer (adult by the way) have seen a lot in his life. Is it that for a long time I did not feel a careful and careful attitude to myself: the interior was not only dirty, but deeply littered, what can we say about the numerous plastic liners covered with deep scratches and strewn with cracks?

The condition is terrible, it seemed, only to throw it away and buy new items in return. However, this operation proved difficult: the supply on the secondary market did not look better, but the prices were biting. Choosing between two evils, traditionally we save: we will fix it with our own hands, although there was no experience of such work. No gods burning pots!

The most damaged parts – a broken rear seat lock and a trunk sill – were found for 1,000 and 2,000 rubles, respectively. Both elements were found to have small cracks. But where to go: the station wagon is not a sedan, a rarity, so even defective parts for it are many times more expensive.

The lock cover is made of thick plastic, all the “useful scraps” are there, there are no deep scratches, you just need to solder it. We will “fill our hand with it”. After watching tons of videos about soldering with a soldering iron and soldering stations, it was decided to use a special plastic soldering gun that sinks iron mini reinforcement, thereby strengthening the structure. It costs 900 rubles at everyone’s favorite Chinese flea market. Black Friday is a must.

The principle of operation of such a tool is extremely simple: we fix the broken part in the desired position with adhesive tape, insert the “cartridge” into the nozzle – there are 4 items in the set, 50 pieces each – we install a piece of iron with crack bridging, press the heating button and until the “haze” appears, we sink, twist a little for a better fixation, wait 10 seconds and take our hand away, leaving our makeshift fittings in the plastic.

There is really only one trick: you have to put the “consumable” all the way to the edge, without pushing it deep into the mouthpiece. So it is easier to pull it out without running the risk of leaving an empty hole in the part. It smells terrible, you have to arrange ventilation in the room, but the result is impressive – the broken part is firmly fixed in its “factory” place. Can be placed.

But with the threshold of the trunk, hard work had to be done. First, the part was covered with a thick layer of dirt, which was washed at home in the bathroom for a long time. Secondly, the detected number of scratches, scrapes and tears exceeded all imaginable and unimaginable expectations: the trunk was used by 146%.

So, first of all, with the simplest lighter, and then with a tourist burner, we burn the entire visible area of the threshold. It has gotten better, you can start the restoration: first we fix all the cracks with braces – almost an hour of painstaking work – and then we solder them along the entire length with an ordinary soldering iron. Add plastic to fix it!

After several frankly unsuccessful options – a plastic card, a pin bar, a pen itself, a food container lid – they came up with an option from the Internet: the best tool for soldering plastic turned out to be a simple clamp. Yes, yes, the same plastic screed: it melts, repairs and fills cracks easily. We solder the inside so we don’t run after beauty – we need it badly.

Summarizing our first experience of soldering plastic, let’s say not the first time and not without sin, but the devil is not as terrible as he is painted. It will turn out, it will certainly work, but it is better to start in places invisible to the eye. There would be desire and patience, as in everything else related to a used car. Take it and do it, nothing else.
