Many car owners are convinced: the more expensive the engine lubricant, the better it is. But in fact this is not the case at all. And why, explains the portal “AvtoVzglyad”.

The high cost of lubricants may be objectively due to the nature of the origin of the base oil. The cheapest is mineral. “Synthetics” are more expensive to produce. So “hydrocracking” synthetic oil is obtained by processing “mineral water”. More expensive polyalphaolefin “synthetics” (PAO) – by synthesis from ethylene gas. An equally expensive base oil is ester oil, which is produced from vegetable oils. But practice shows that for the majority of both modern and not very new engines, it does not matter what kind of lubricant is poured into them. Most importantly, it meets factory specifications – especially viscosity.

Ester oil and PAO are generally intended for engines operating in near-critical conditions: at maximum speed or, for example, with regular starts at -50 ° C and below. But in general, all modern power units run perfectly on hydrocracking oils, with the spread of sales prices perhaps due to marketing reasons.

That is, when buying a cheaper hydrocracking lubricant, the car owner does not overpay “for the brand”. In addition, choosing affordable motor oils, he reliably insures himself against buying counterfeits under an “expensive” brand. After all, a product that is relatively budgetary, but with well-known features, is by definition better than an unknown product from a nice box with the logo of a well-known manufacturer.

Also note that cheap oil can be changed more often. After all, it is not as expensive as with an expensive product. The fact is that for many modern engines, car manufacturers have set absolutely insane “change intervals” for lubricants – up to 20,000 km. And if you oil twice as often as recommended, even if you use a cheaper lubricant, the engine will only thank you.

Incidentally, the additive package will also be updated more often at the same time, which is exceptionally good for the engine. Wear products from the engine are also removed from the lubrication system with every “oil change”. The presence of these types of abrasives, as you know, accelerates the failure of the rubbing parts of the mechanism. And removing these particles “from the circulation” is beneficial for the life of the power unit.

Recently, products of cool brands in the domestic market of motor oils began to cost absolutely incredible money. Therefore, the transition to cheaper domestic brands with shorter replacement intervals will have the most beneficial effect on the survivability of Russian passenger car engines.
