The Mercedes-Benz brand, represented in Russia by a whole group of companies, is about to sell local assets to a local investor, Avtodom Group of Companies. Details of the agreement, as well as the amount of the contract, are not being made public. However, as one of the top managers of the current Mercedes-Benz dealership told AvtoVzglyad portal, the contract will be signed before December 25. What does this mean for ordinary citizens – owners of premium “Germans”? Another great disaster is approaching.
How Mercedes-Benz will continue to operate in the territory of the Russian Federation and what will happen to the warranty obligations for cars already sold is a big and controversial question. Official dealers are preparing for the fact that in the very near future the parent company DaimlerChrysler AG will deprive them of access to the services necessary to work with the machine software during diagnosis, maintenance and repair. And when this happens, Mercedes, whose age does not exceed 5 years, suddenly turns from luxury carriages into pumpkins.
In practice it could look like this. As you know, when replacing during warranty repair or after an accident, some parts or assemblies of a car that have their own electronic unit (headlights, lights, various sensors, control units, etc.) must be “registered” at the gas station, thus integrating it into the overall vehicle control system. This is done using the original Mercedes Star Diagnosis C4 scanner and special programs such as HHT-WIN, DAS, Xentry.
But the problem is that the operation of all these systems must be uninterrupted and “coordinated” with headquarters. And what kind of continuity can we talk about if Mercedes-Benz leaves the domestic market?
After the Germans hand over their assets to the new owner, dealers and all those who take on the repair and maintenance of Mercedes-Benz cars, they will have to look for ways to solve a major “software” problem. Maybe they will start using devices with European IP addresses. Although, as practice shows, the management of the brand is set up as maliciously as possible in relation to the “pirates” and other cunning people. So most likely it will block work on such workarounds by any means. And especially on the territory of the Russian Federation.
The question of the full operation of the Mercedes me connect mobile application – which allows you, for example, to remotely start the engine, control the status of door locks, adjust the climate system settings from your smartphone – also remains open. It is very likely that without the technical support of the headquarters in Germany it will soon stop working.
At least 100,000 Mercedes owners are at risk, as Russian dealers have sold nearly as many cars over the past three years. More precisely, in 2020 they delivered 38,815 cars to customers, in 2021 – 43,011, and in the first nine months of 2022 – 9093. Now their owners, who have taken a sip of grief from a shortage of spare parts and a noticeable increase of prices for work, will encounter another problem related to the service support of electronic circuits and units affecting both comfort and safety.
When consumers used to look at the brand, compare technical specifications and price tags when buying a car, now the availability of timely service and the cost of maintaining a car come to the fore as part of long-term planning. As for Mercedes-Benz, taking into account all of the above, one can only regret such an “anti-Russian” position of the once highly respected, quite popular and beloved by many automakers.
Under no circumstances should the availability of a modern product or service depend on the buyer’s racial, denominational (religious), cultural or any other beliefs. It is wrong to take into account his place of residence or political views. It is indeed a pity that major world-renowned companies, which have been demonstrating customer care in their policies for years, followed the example of a handful of high-ranking officials, effectively ‘undoing’ their reputation with consumers.
Will such behavior of this particular or other automakers who have joined those who have decided to adhere to the policy of “leaving the Russian Federation” have any influence on interstate conflicts? Probably not. The nuance, however, is that any disagreements will be resolved sooner or later. And after the “reconciliation” you need to return. And the question is how all those automakers who let their customers down can again “look them in the eye” … Unfortunately, few people think about this now.
