Oddly enough, drivers still do not have a common opinion about the most suitable “windshield wipers” for use in the cold season. But everyone has a habit of using some type of it. The AvtoVzglyad portal outlines the e’s on the issue of windshield wipers more preferable for winter.

Now “wipers” of the so-called frameless type are becoming more and more widespread: the good old frame brushes are gradually losing their position. There are also hybrid cleaners for sale, a kind of cross between frame and frameless, but they have not yet gained mass popularity. Experienced drivers know that the old frame structure, unlike the more modern frameless one, is much more preferable for operation in the Russian winter. Especially in the “winter brush” version, when the articulations are covered with a rubber cover.

To understand why “frameless” cope worse with their tasks in icy weather, it is enough to pay attention to their design. Such a “wiper” actually consists of a rubber strip, inside which there is a piece of elastic steel tape, which is responsible for the rigidity of the structure and its fit to the windshield. In the frame system, the pressure on the surface to be cleaned is provided by an openwork hinge system. In winter, many car owners notice that more aesthetic and compact frameless wipers begin to leave poorly cleaned spots on the glass. Even if they are new. While a wireframe model on the exact same machine removes snow, moisture and dirt quite well at the same time.

This is because a frameless brush only works well if the bend of the steel band exactly follows the profile of the windshield. If you bought a “frameless” from a store and focused only on the size of the brush (like most car owners), the fit on the glass of your particular car will most likely be uneven. While we are talking about work in the warm season, the elasticity of the rubber band itself is enough to compensate for this discrepancy. But when the frost comes, it hardens. This is where uncleaned areas appear on the glass.

And the competitor of the frame (in fact, thanks to the frame) ensures that the rubber “sheet” fits tightly to the glass along the entire length without exception and regardless of the outside temperature. Yes, the frame construction is bulkier compared to the frameless construction. However, aesthetics do not care much about the cleanliness of the windshield at night on the highway or in the snow. The frame brush sometimes whistles and sails at speeds noticeably higher than 100 km/h. But driving systematically at 130-150 km/h on a speedometer in winter, through snow and ice on public roads, is not a good idea from a safety point of view. And finally, with the arrival of the warm season, the frame brush, due to its low price, is not a pity to throw it away, returning the frameless brush to its place. Until next winter.
