Why jet nozzles are better in winter than fan nozzles

Car manufacturers widely use different designs of fluid supply systems for the windshield and rear windows of the car. At the same time, disputes about which solutions are more effective never disappear. And they glow especially brightly in the cold. Portal “AvtoVzglyad” expresses its position on this issue.

Recently, automakers have used nozzles that spray water in one or more jets, as well as fan jets. The latter are believed to be more effective than the former, as they evenly distribute the “antifreeze” over the “frontal” and cover almost 80% of the “visor” area. In this case, the “windshield wipers” are less subject to wear, as their rubber bands do not rub against a dry surface.

Wide jets are not liked due to the fact that the “washer” is delivered pointwise. Brushes “walk” on dry glass, and this significantly reduces their resource. And the glass itself is quickly covered with small scratches. All this is true, but only at positive temperatures and in the summer heat. When winter comes, the situation changes.

In the freezing season, the viscosity of pumped liquids increases, because compounds based on isopropyl alcohol (methanol is prohibited in our country) are used. And here you need to look at the manufacturer and the temperature range (-15 or -25 degrees). Some consumables get such a viscosity in the cold that they cannot “squeeze” through the small holes of the jets. Of course, the composition will not freeze, but it will not work as expected. By the way, that’s why the performance of the pump is also important, but this is a topic for a separate article.

If you use methanol liquid, then at 20 degrees of frost it is almost three times more effective than vodka. That is, it is easier with it for both the engine and the jets. However, we do not recommend stopping at the curb and buying jerry cans with such contents: no one knows what is inside.

Remember that a droplet in the cold freezes much faster than a jet. So it turns out that jet nozzles are much more efficient than sprinklers in winter. Liquid will pass through it quickly and it will not freeze. And if icing does occur, a simple needle solves the problem and breaks the ice.
