Thinking about increasing the autonomy of their electric vehicles, Volkswagen announced that it will make a number of adjustments to the platform OIE (modular Electric Platform) – 100% intended for machines of the type for which they do not need to be configured from a common base. The goal is to reach the range 700 km.
The news was revealed during the manufacturer’s presentation at Paris Electric Car Day, an electrical technology event hosted by UBS, a Swiss investment group responsible for asset management, investment banking, governance and securities brokerage.

MEB is at the heart of all electric vehicles in the VW ID family, the most famous of which are the ID.3 and the electric van. Established in 2015, it had the goal of maximizing advances in battery cell manufacturing.
The increase in autonomy for a possible range of 700 km will be based mainly on an increase in the charging rate through an adjustment in the MEB. This number will increase to 200 kW and will allow long-distance travel.
This update should debut in 2023 releases such as the Aero B electric sedan and the next iterations of the ID series.
The semiconductor crisis during the boom of electric vehicles worries
Despite expectations of progress with modernization in the MIB, the semiconductor crisis – which should continue into next year – is still reason for caution.
Semiconductors are materials of electrical conductivity and indispensable for vehicles of the type – more and more commercially, their production requires a mass device. Sales of electric vehicles rose to 4.5 million worldwide, tripling in 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic, according to consulting firm LMC Automotive.

The current crisis has been fueled by factors such as slowdowns in production, trade disputes between the US and China, and fires at component factories. Due to the difficult situation, automakers are predicting a shortage of the element in the coming years.
According to Volkswagen’s chief financial officer, Arno Antlitz, the scenario should not generally improve until 2024. However, a slight “breathe” is not expected in the second half of 2022, even if it does not fix “structural” problems, as he told the German newspaper Boersen Zeitung.
