Sony and Honda teamed up last year to enter the electric vehicle market. Now, during CES 2023, the companies have unveiled the first prototype of the Afeela EV, the company’s electric vehicle, to the public. With the Qualcomm chipset, the Afeela EV has a total of 45 radars, sensors and cameras.
Afeela EV is the company’s first prototype and replaces the Vision-S 02, which appeared during the CES 2022 exhibition. So far, there is no information about the autonomy and functionality of the electric car. The vehicle will have 14 outdoor cameras, a LIDAR sensor, radars and other sensors, for a total of 45 indoor and outdoor devices to assist the driver as well as ensure safe autonomous driving.
In addition, the Afeela EV will have a central multimedia component that will display relevant information about the car’s battery, speed, and use the light “to communicate with others.” According to Yasuhide Mizuno, CEO of Sony Honda Mobility, the partnership with Qualcomm was instrumental in building the Afeela electric vehicle. “Achieving smart mobility requires constant software updates and high performance computing.”
Sony introduced several new features at CES 2023 and the companies’ joint venture is called Sony Honda Mobility (SHM). Unveiled at CES 2022, the project brings the two companies together to achieve a common goal in which Sony and Honda retain their identities. That is, they work together to create the Afeela EV, but continue to work independently.
According to SHM, pre-sales of the vehicles will begin in mid-2025, with the car’s market launch scheduled for spring 2026 (spring in the US starts in March). So far, the price range for the electric car has not been revealed, but it can be assumed that the Afeela EV is a premium car. Next year, Sony Honda Mobility should release more EV news and possibly price information.
