OUR autopilotsemi-autonomous driving system Tesla caused another accident in the United States of America. This time alone Tesla Model S changed lanes and braked hard, resulting in an eight-vehicle crash. As a result, nine people were injured, including a two-year-old child, and the road was blocked for more than an hour.

The situation occurred on November 24, Thanksgiving Day, on the San Francisco Bay Bridge in California, USA, but this became known only now, after the investigation of The Intercept. The driver blames the car’s autopilot (also called FSD or “Full Self Driving”) for the confusion. Watch the video:

As you can see in the video, the vehicle is in a more central lane and starts to brake quickly, turn on the arrow and move to the left lane – with vehicles at a higher speed. After changing lanes, it comes to a halt, leading to a series of collisions.

The NHTSA is investigating further details of the raid. The child injured in the accident received an abrasion on the back of the head on the left side of the head, as well as a bruise. In the photo of the accident, the stroller is parked in front of the car in which the child was injured.

Elon Musk Irony

Ironically, just hours before the accident, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the FSD (feature in progress) beta release to over 285,000 drivers who had paid for the system. The decision has raised concerns among road safety experts who fear more cases of recklessness involving Tesla vehicles.

Continuation after commercial

Tesla vehicles that used FSD were involved in 273 known crashes between July 2021 and December 2022, according to NHTSA. This represents almost 70% of the total number of accidents involving the improved control system.

Over the past few months, there have been many complaints from drivers pointing to problems with “ghost braking” when using autopilot. More than 100 such complaints were filed with the NHTSA in three months, according to the Washington Post.
