OUR CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2023 introduced several novelties in its latest edition, and one of the coolest was the concept model. BMW i Vision Deand.
This new concept car, presented bmw CES 2023 showcases a number of developments that the automaker intends to work on in the coming years.
BMW i Vision Dee unveiled at CES 2023 in Las Vegas
The BMW i Vision Dee is a futuristic mid-size sedan with a minimalistic design. The name “Dee” means digital emotional experience. The company promises digital features that will go beyond the level of voice control and driver assistance systems we are used to today.
One of the novelties is the display of information on the windshield through the projection display. BMW’s new head-up display extends across the entire width of the windshield, giving you a glimpse into the next generation of vehicles. From 2025 this innovation will be available on NEW CLASS. Introduced at CES 2022, the E Ink technology that allowed the BMW iX Flow to change between white and black has been enhanced to allow you to change the appearance of the car with up to 32 different colors.
“With the BMW i Vision Dee, we show what is possible when hardware and software come together. In this way, we can use the full potential of digitalization to turn the car into a smart companion. This is the future for car manufacturers – and for BMW too: combining a virtual experience with genuine driving pleasure.“, says Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Directors BMW AG. “At the same time, the BMW i Vision Dee is another step towards NEUE KLASSE. With this vision, we look to the future and highlight the critical importance of digitalization for our next generation products.“, – the performer finishes.
BMW head-up display available on NEUE KLASSE models from 2025
In the BMW i Vision Dee, the head-up display takes on new proportions and acts as a kind of virtual reality, projecting information onto the windshield. In this way, the head-up display acts as a screen and demonstrates the enormous potential of projection technology, which will be used in the future for the concept of displaying and managing vehicle information. The standard production version of the BMW head-up display, which extends across the entire width of the windshield, will be used on NEUE KLASSE models from 2025.
BMW Mixed Reality Slider
The BMW Mixed Reality slider, combined with the advanced head-up display, is a digital highlight and central operating control of the BMW i Vision Dee. Using sensors in the instrument cluster, the driver can decide how much digital content he wants to see on the head-up display. The five-level choices range from analog to driving information, communication system content, and augmented reality projection, all the way to entering the metaverse. Mixed reality can be experienced in the BMW i Vision Dee in an immersive way that engages multiple senses without the need for additional tools and creates a dimension of driving pleasure for the user.

Merging the physical with the digital: “phygital”
The digital experience in the BMW i Vision Dee starts outside the car, with a personalized welcome scene that combines graphic elements, lighting effects and sound. Natural language serves as the simplest and most intuitive form of interaction to understand people and their vehicles. BMW’s headlights and closed grille also form a common “figital” (fusion of physical and digital) badge on a single surface, allowing the car to reproduce different facial expressions. This means that the BMW i Vision Dee can communicate with people and at the same time visually express mood swings such as joy, surprise or approval. The BMW i Vision Dee can also project the driver’s avatar image onto the side window to further personalize the welcome scene.
Advances in e-ink technology now in color
Following the debut of the e-ink BMW iX Flow at CES 2022, the BMW Group is introducing a colorful version of e-ink technology in the BMW i Vision Dee. The BMW i Vision Dee, instead of just alternating between black and white, now features a multi-colour, fully customizable and customizable look. ePaper film from BMW Group partner E Ink is applied to the bodywork to create this magical color display that can display up to 32 colors. The body surface of the BMW i Vision Dee is divided into 240 E Ink segments, each of which is controlled separately. This allows you to generate and modify an almost infinite number of templates in seconds. The laser cutting process used to cut the film and the electronic control design were developed in collaboration with E Ink. BMW Group engineers have developed an adaptation of this technology to curved surfaces and animation programming to create a form of personalization that is unique in the global automotive sector.
The minimalist design of the BMW i Vision Dee
The design of the BMW i Vision Dee has been intentionally simplified to focus on the digital experience and DNA of the BMW brand. The appearance is defined by the classic design of the three-volume sedan, which forms the basis of the BMW brand. Traditional design elements such as the BMW grille, twin round headlights and Hofmeister surrounds have been reinvented, while figural badges have replaced analogue elements. This gives the BMW i Vision Dee its own digital yet human character. Inside, digitization goes hand in hand with a reduction in the use of materials, controls and screens so that nothing detracts from the digital experience and a new sense of greater driving pleasure. The unconventional design of the steering wheel, with its central vertical radius, creates touch points that come to life at close proximity or touch, and can be controlled with the flip of a thumb. These “physical” touch points control the choice of content projected onto the windshield and, together with the head-up display, support the principle of “hands on the steering wheel, eyes on the road“.
