With tears in my eyes: all the horrors of owning a used Mercedes-Benz ML SUV

Our citizens literally idolize German cars. Especially the second generation ML, which came on the market in early 2005. People often bought “used” ones, invested a certain amount in repairs and rejoiced. But times have changed and this approach is now literally a ruin. The AvtoVzglyad portal tells about the hidden “pitfalls” of the premium bestseller.

Mercedes-Benz ML (W164) replaced the model with the index 163 on the assembly line. Instead of a frame, it received a load-bearing body, and the torsion bars in the suspension were changed to a multi-link scheme. Interestingly, the base car is essentially a crossover. But it does have the Pro Off-Road package, which includes a two-stage transfer case, as well as center and rear differentials. Such versions are most common.

As mentioned above, our citizens often bought used Emelkas with a mileage of up to 100,000 km, invested a certain amount of honestly earned rubles in repairs and enjoyed the comfort of a prestigious car. Now it is better not to do this, because even the first diagnosis can unpleasantly surprise you.

If a diesel engine is installed under the hood of an experienced “scoundrel” (and there are many such versions), then the Russian “solarium” already condemns fuel injectors, glow plugs and a crankcase breather valve to replacement at 60,000 km. The turbine can “grumble” from a fervent ride, and the silent blocks of the rear lower levers need to be replaced in the suspension.

We must not forget that ML, like any “premium”, requires attention. This means that it would be good to change the oil every 7,000-10,000 km, renew the lubricant in the “box” after 60,000 km, and in the gearboxes after 80,000 km.

This whole list already promises a decent cost, but it does not guarantee that there will be no more “sores”. According to an owner who has driven the ML for more than 200,000 km, the SUV is becoming a real “money sucker”. So, for a certain mileage, his blimp burst, the ball joint collapsed, the hub bearing buzzed, the brake hoses broke, and the “pneuma” compressor stopped pumping.

Further. Once closed the fuel pump in the tank and had to call a tow truck. And at 150,000 km, the steering rods rattled, the CV joint creaked, the flow meter burst, and the shock absorbers flowed. By the way, the faulty air suspension compressor was replaced with a Chinese one, but it also broke down, having passed only 30,000 km. Against this background, constantly burning light bulbs, a dead battery and a bursting expansion tank are trifles.

As a result, about 1,300,000 rubles were invested in repairs, while the car itself was bought before the crisis for 1,200,000 rubles. But even now, when the “prices” for all cars skyrocket, the used ML managed to sell only for a million “wooden”. That’s the price of glamour.
