OSAGO still remains a “piece of toilet paper”

At the end of last year, insurers unexpectedly paid out slightly more to accident victims under OSAGO than last year. What is the reason for such “generosity”, the portal “AvtoVzglyad” found out.

“The increase in the cost of spare parts naturally led to a sharp increase in payments and to a slower, but still noticeable increase in the average premium for OSAGO,” says Evgeny Ufimtsev, president of the Russian Union of Motor Insurers (RSA).

According to PCA statistics, the average payment for OSAGO in December 2022 was 91,314 ₽, which is 23% more than in December 2021 and 28% more than in January 2022. A year ago, the average payment was at the level of 71,379 rubles. Note that at the end of 2022, the average price of a policy in the country was 6,793 against 5,599 “wooden” in 2021. In other words, the average car owner paid 21% more for OSAGO last year than a year earlier.

Previously, the PCA admitted that insurance companies had actually completely stopped repairing cars affected by traffic accidents under OSAGO late last year. Instead, they try to make it up with money. At the same time, a trick called “car wear” is used with might and main, which allows you to pay the owner of a broken car only half of the estimated amount for the repair.

It is known to be calculated from data contained in a special reference book published by the RSA. In it, the cost of spare parts largely corresponds to the prices of the cheapest Chinese “non-original” that can only be found on the market. For example, insurers manage to underpay huge sums of money to victims of accidents. But when calculating the rates at which OSAGO policies are subsequently sold, they also use data about the cost of repairing cars with the most expensive genuine parts and consumables.
