How China is ending the future of the US auto industry

The electrification of the automotive industry, multiplied by the global rivalry of world economies, sometimes leads to bizarre effects for the participants in this race. Portal “AutoVzglyad” tells about one of these collisions.

This time, the decision was made around the production of batteries for electric vehicles. Now the United States is almost trying to become the world’s locomotive in the development of this type of transport. Europe, which was actively fluttering in the same direction until the spring of last year, is now struggling with electricity generation costs that have risen many times over. And it is actively “scratching its turnips” by suddenly discovering that to power a growing fleet of “green” vehicles, it is necessary to burn more and more unenvironmentally friendly coal in power plants.

And in the United States, far from European political and economic problems, the “law to reduce inflation” began to work on January 1. It gives a lot of preferences to companies registered there, which are engaged in the production of electric trains, among other things. But here’s the problem: almost half of the world’s production of “batteries” for them is concentrated in China! And for some time now they have been trying not to be friends with China on the North American continent. That is, Chinese batteries for patriotic electric cars manufactured in the USA are “zashkvar”, haram and other “fu-fu-fu”. The American car industry is faced with the question of whether batteries are available to complete its electric cars.

In addition, LG Energy and General Motors recently postponed negotiations (within their joint venture) on the construction of a battery plant in the United States. Because of the Koreans, who ‘started turning their noses’. And all because now only in South Korea you can get a decent amount of batteries for electric vehicles of non-Chinese origin.

The witty sons of the Land of Morning Calm have traced the current “trick” perfectly. And now they are twisting the arms not only of the US, but also of the European auto industry, getting rid of high prices for their goods and extorting additional preferences in joint projects.

“Three Korean battery suppliers are the only opportunity for global automakers to produce electric vehicles under the US Inflation Reduction Act,” Chung Won Sook, an analyst with Hi Investment & Securities, told The Korea Times.

For example, Chinese battery manufacturers, unknowingly, with the help of US lawmakers, delayed the development of the main (from the point of view of eco-fanatics) direction of the global automotive industry.
