While every “iron” talks about the delivery of American tanks and infantry fighting vehicles to Europe, the AvtoVzglyad portal decided to find out in detail: what are the Bradley M2 armored vehicles advertised in the media?

The main armored vehicle of the US Army – tracked BMP M2 “Bradley” (Bradley) – was developed in the 70s of the last century. Since then it has undergone numerous upgrades. Judging by press reports, the M2 Bradley BMP in the A2 ODS modification (the most modern of all mass-produced armored personnel carriers) will go to Ukraine. The vehicle is equipped with an automatic 25 mm cannon and a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun. There is also a TOW anti-tank missile launcher with two missiles. All weapons are mounted on a turret.

Crew – three people. Guns and missiles can be controlled by both the gunner and the vehicle commander. The engine is located in the front of the body next to the driver, which serves as additional protection for the crew and seven parachutists. Anti-tank missiles can hit a target at a distance of up to four kilometers.

The Bradley M2A2 ODS aluminum hull has steel armor and is lined with Kevlar on the inside. Outside, the BMP is suspended with dynamic protection blocks that protect against cumulative ammunition. It is also equipped with an infrared anti-tank missile defense system.

In addition, the tactical navigation system TACNAV, an eye-safe laser range finder and a thermal imager for the driver are used in the vehicle. “Bradley” M2A2 was created as a counterbalance to the Soviet BMP-1 and BPM-2. The latter, in a modernized form, serves as the main type of armored personnel carrier of the Russian motorized infantry – in addition to the wheeled heirs of the BTR-80.

The shells of the Russian 30-millimeter automatic cannon, the main weapon of our “Batrs”, unfortunately do not penetrate the armor of the “Bradley” from either side. On the other hand, US 25 millimeter ammunition with a depleted uranium core pierces the steel of Russian infantry fighting vehicles at almost all likely combat ranges.

Granted, the Bradley M2A2 can’t swim. The creators sacrificed this “option” at the design stage to strengthen the armor. Our BMP can still swim, but you won’t envy her in a one-on-one duel with the Bradley.

The most modern Russian infantry fighting vehicle, the BMP-3, also cannot boast of armor similar to the Bradley. But at least she has a trump card – a 100mm gun in the turret – instead of the 30mm “machine gun” of its predecessors. A hit from this gun in the Bradley is guaranteed to take out the American. It is a pity that BMP-3s are extremely few in the Russian army.

But not everything is so bad for our military. First, the Russian BMP-2M is equipped with the Fagot or Konkurs anti-tank system with four missiles in front of it. And this is a good anti-American argument. Secondly, the main danger to armored personnel carriers in the Ukrainian area of operations is not other armored vehicles, but artillery and portable anti-tank systems.

According to Western military estimates, here, on 55% of the terrain, direct visibility is only possible at distances of up to 500 meters. In such conditions, it is difficult to talk about such a thing as tank duels. At the moment it is known about the intention of the West to deliver about 50 Bradley M2A2 ODS to Ukraine. In the future, their number is promised to be increased to 200 units.

Recall that Ukrainian troops have lost a total of at least 6,000 tanks and armored vehicles since the beginning of the SVO. With this in mind, it can be assumed that a hundred or two American Bradleys will not be able to fundamentally influence the course of events. But they’ll probably do a good job.
