The agency “National Credit Rating” (NKR) came to the conclusion that car thefts in Russia have decreased sharply. The AvtoVzglyad portal introduces readers to the conclusions of experts, which sharply contradict the “crying” of insurers about the growth of car thefts in recent months.

According to NKR analysts for 2022, the number of car thefts and thefts in Russia has decreased by 13.5% compared to the previous year. Fewer than 22,500 vehicles were stolen last year, a record low in 20 years. And the minimum monthly level of hijackings – 1267 cases – was recorded in December 2022. At the same time, the police showed a record resolution rate of this type of crime – 68%. For reference, we recall that the record for theft in Russia was set in 2004. Subsequently, the owners took away 125,000 cars. And the disclosure was at the level of 33%.

The NKR expects the trend towards a decrease in the number of hijackings to continue in 2023. Analysts say the number of cases of illegal possession of someone else’s car will be another 11% less – no more than 20,000 in 12 months of this year.

Various factors are mentioned for this. First of all, there are numerous traffic police cameras on the country’s roads, the fleet of which is constantly growing. With their help, it is possible to solve crimes faster. In addition, they act preventively against potential hijackers. It should be noted that over the past year the number of lines of automatic police control has increased sharply. For example, in May 2022, the traffic police reported a total of 23,400 mobile and stationary cameras at its disposal.

And in February there were already about 44,000 positions in the official register of their locations. At the same time, there were almost 35,000 unique coordinates for the placement of control lines, so it can be said that the number of police cameras in Russia has increased by at least 30% over the past year, according to the most conservative estimates.

At the same time, restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then the events of February 2022 have radically complicated the process of selling stolen cars for criminals. Due to the closure or tightening of border controls, many international channels for selling stolen vehicles abroad have become obsolete. In other words, the increased complexity of selling stolen cars could not but reduce the scale of this “business”. The legalization of relatively new stolen vehicles was made more difficult by the introduction of an electronic TCP into circulation. Its forgery virtually guarantees the subsequent exposure of the corrupt police officer and his accomplices, the hijackers.

NKR representatives emphasize that the growth in car thefts predicted by many experts for 2022 (due to the withdrawal of car brands from Russia and the rise in spare parts prices) has not been noticed. Perhaps this is due to the high efficiency of the police fight against gangs of criminal car dismantlers.

Thus, maintaining the current trend towards a decrease in car thefts in Russia, the purchase of a car alarm will become a waste of money in the near future. Which will lead to the actual extinction of the once prosperous “guild” of masters of installing security systems on vehicles.
