The old man, who had previously not been distinguished by increased mobility, suddenly left his hometown and hurried to the very south of Africa. He rarely visited this continent and even then he did not climb beyond the Sahara. What prompted the president of the most friendly republic to drop everything and go where the Belarusian Makar drove no calves? The AvtoVzglyad portal suspects that lithium beckoned him in the distance.

Maybe let’s start collecting a puzzle of clues scattered around half the world. Firstly, during Sergei Lavrov’s visit to Minsk in January, our good neighbor Alexander Lukashenko promised: “We will not wag here, twist something: today security is even more important for us, not only for Russia.” Whatever this mysterious euphemism means, Russian weapons went to Belarus, where the reopening of military equipment and combat coordination began.

Second, some of the largest reserves of lithium are in Zimbabwe’s mines, and the government of this country wants to build national wealth on this basis. And now investors from China are preparing to develop the Zimbabwean deposit with reserves of 11 million tons of lithium carbonate.

Third, last year’s ruling by Zimbabwe’s Mining Minister, Winston Chitando, banned the export of lithium-bearing ores or unrefined lithium from Zimbabwe to any other country.

Fourth, the lithium market is experiencing unprecedented growth due to the explosive development of electric vehicle production, which without the same lithium-ion batteries are mere dummies of varying degrees of ugliness.

Fifth, lithium-ion battery production in Russia is threatened by sanctions as Canadian companies with deposits in Argentina and Chile have refused to supply ore to Russian factories. Our own deposits, while partially explored, are not yet ready for commercial exploitation.

And finally, sixth. Russia plunged headlong into the gamble started by certain circles in the West for the global lobby for “environmentally friendly transport”. Production of electric vehicles has already begun in the capital “Moskvich” and Lipetsk “Motorinvest”. AvtoVAZ, Kaliningrad Avtotor, Chelny Kama threaten to launch their production in the near future – and this is not a complete list of planned startups. It’s hard to say how the global electric car adventure will end, but it seems like a profitable venture to carve out a niche in the battery business, even with its own raw materials.

And a personal tractor as a gift

So why late last month did the President of Belarus travel 7,982 kilometers from Minsk to Harare and meet Emmerson Dambuzo Mnangagwa, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, who disdained such obvious dangers as sharks, gorillas and large evil crocodiles? Certainly not to give your counterpart a personal tractor – this simple task would be perfectly performed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is also currently traveling around the Black Continent.

According to the Zimbabwean publication TheNewsHawks, which has its own sources in the country’s government, “Europe’s last dictator” went there because of the incipient lithium fever – “white gold” threatens to eclipse the hype of Elborado, California and Alaska. During the one-on-one meeting of the presidents, several agreements were reached, including the supply by the Zimbabwean side of lithium concessions and the construction by the Belarusian side of lithium processing plants in Zimbabwe.

The battle for Africa between the world powers has already begun and is getting fiercer. Russia with allied Belarus does not want to be sidelined. But why was Alexander Lukashenko chosen for such an important task? Yes, precisely because this mission is very responsible.

Who are we against?

Emmerson Mnangagwa first visited Belarus in 2015 as deputy to then-head of state Robert Gabriel Mugabe. He then visited Minsk in his capacity as president in January 2019. Since then, he was impressed by Lukashenko’s personality, so it would be hard to find a better candidate to establish economic ties.

For its part, it is also beneficial for Russia to include Belarus in its international business plans, as it needs support in the confrontation with NATO. Building factories is a costly project, the Allied country alone will not make it. And the Belarusian market is too small for such a large-scale enterprise. So our Immense will not miss its share of the profit either.

And Alexander Grigoryevich did not disappoint us. Mutual sympathy between the leaders of Belarus and Zimbabwe only grew stronger after his emotional speech. He stated: “The Americans have imposed sanctions on you not because you are undemocratic. But because you decided to take control of your land and minerals. You do not allow various rogues and scammers to use your insides. This is the reason for the sanctions. Just like in previous centuries, they try to bring you back to your knees.”

The benefits for Zimbabwe, Belarus and of course Russia are obvious. To get such a tasty snack from under the noses of the Americans, British and other French is already a victory. And there, you see, we will learn how to make batteries no worse than Chinese ones. You never know?
