Before proceeding with the production of a particular model, the car manufacturer necessarily examines it in a wind tunnel, studying and, of course, eliminating the flaws in the aerodynamics of the body. There are many solutions for this, ranging from small bulges and tides to more radical ones in the form of changing the look and adding additional decorative elements. The rear spoiler is one of those. That’s just to install it because you want to, we wouldn’t advise it.

The spoiler on the trunk lid or on the roof above the rear window came from sports to the car industry. It is here that installing a spoiler solves many tasks in order to improve the dynamics, handling, braking and of course the stability of the car on the track. The idea was immediately picked up by the mass segment of civilian cars and those who benefit from it – manufacturers of various tuning accessories. The latter, in their brochures and accompanying documents for their products, promise to improve all indicators, including fuel consumption. In reality, however, everything is much sadder.

As the reader understood well, a well-chosen spoiler, in addition to downforce, is able to improve many of the characteristics of the car. And the keyword here is smart. Now let’s take a look at the products that are on the shelves of an auto parts store. Besides the fact that some of them are made of low-grade and moreover traumatic plastic, no one has ever tested these products in a wind tunnel.

Judge for yourself: what kind of basement co-op with a small machine that molds plastic or Plexiglas can afford to seriously test its spoilers, and even on all the car models it was produced for? That’s right, none! This would significantly increase the cost of the manufacturing process. So they sculpt a “humpback whale”, which is more or less precisely adjusted in the place of attachment and looks out. That’s all science. This is easier to sell than carbon or aluminum. A low-quality spoiler for a conditional five kopecks (forget the practical ABS plastic), bought on the Chinese market, on the contrary, spoils everything, and sometimes so much that even the rear wiper blades can not cope. And this is on top of the fact that plastic and other low-quality materials from which both the spoiler itself and the fasteners are made often cause this trinket to fail quickly. And it’s a good thing she doesn’t fly into one of the other road users. Also, such tuning elements quickly change shape and color under the influence of ultraviolet radiation.

Since most products on the market have not been wind tunnel tested in any way, you cannot expect other “nishtyaks” like from a sports spoiler. And even vice versa: the stability of the car at high speeds deteriorates; fuel consumption increases; aerodynamic noise occurs at speeds where acoustic comfort was previously at its best.

If you decide to install a rear spoiler, you should do it wisely. Choose an exceptionally high quality product that not only works for your car, but also delivers. Otherwise it’s just a waste of money and damage to the car. Another reason to talk to the traffic police. As we remember, no one canceled the technical regulations!
