Insert stickers in cars is an old fad that still circulates to this day. While the practice of affixing these labels to a car body to decorate it is common, window personalization has always been controversial. This week Tsetran-SP (São Paulo State Board of Traffic) showed that a driver who sticks stickers on the front side windows can be fined nearly 200 reais and other penalties.

Information from UOL indicated that the announcement is a way to stop a new trend among drivers who put up stickers with the design. “The Simpsons” on the side windows of the car, as if the characters were sitting in the driver’s or passenger’s seat.

These stickers, featuring characters such as Lisa, Bart and Homer Simpson, are easy to find online and in general stores, priced between R$20 and R$60, depending on the model and size. Although many of these stickers are for other types of decoration not related to car windows, many drivers buy them to personalize their car.

Penalty and points in the wallet

This type of decoration, despite appearing harmless, can interfere with drivers and cause traffic accidents, according to Chetran in São Paulo.

According to lawyer Marco Fabrizio Vieira, a member of Cetran-SP, a driver who shows such a sticker on a car window will be punished for serious violations, including a fine of BRL 195.23 and five points in the piggy bank. Vieira also notes that the car can even be held until the accessory is completely removed.

Resolution No. 254/2007 Contran (National Road Traffic Council) states that the front side windows of vehicles are considered indispensable to manageability.

In short, cars that drive with the front windows fully or partially closed may be subject to Article 230, Title XVI, of the Brazilian Traffic Code.

“In short, the law prohibits sticking the front side windows of a car. This sticker from The Simpsons is not small and without a shadow of a doubt affects safety and handling.”Vieira says.

The lawyer also adds that small stickers, such as identifying an elderly or disabled driver, are allowed, as long as they do not affect the driver’s vision.
