The use of non-genuine parts in car repairs can lead to defects. This should be remembered by anyone puzzled by looking for spare parts from alternative manufacturers in the hopes of saving money. You also need to understand that not only the vehicle owners want to save money, but also the manufacturers of alternative spare parts. What can affect the quality of the non-original. Here’s a good example of that.

The flywheel, positioned as an analogue of the original UMZ 4173.1005115-20 part, installed on the engines of GAZelles popular with domestic airlines, fell into the hands of the engineers of the Ulyanovsk Motor Plant. The spare part we are considering is in high demand. Judge for yourself whether the car is operated “to the tail and mane” (as it should be for commercial vehicles), mainly in the city, where due to the heavy traffic the number of gears and thus the release of the clutch is enormous, then the wear of the the flywheel surface in contact with the friction lining proves to be critical after a few clutch replacements. Anyone who overloads the car, prefers an active driving style, has every chance to completely burn the clutch, causing irreparable damage to the flywheel, which is an integral part of the assembly.

In short, it is profitable for manufacturers of alternative spare parts to offer their products in the market. But for car owners, replacing the original part with a low-quality alternative can lead to losses. Why? Let’s study the factory experts’ report on the compliance with the above-mentioned flywheel design documentation.

Let’s start with the mass of the product. The alternative flywheel is almost a kilo lighter than the original. This saves materials for the manufacturer, but has a negative effect on the engine’s operation, because the masses of all moving parts of the combustion engine, especially the flywheel, are taken into account when calculating the moments of inertia. But it’s still half the effort. The manufacturer of the alternative part did not meet the dimensions of the factory drawing, causing a severe imbalance, which exceeded the allowable requirement of the design documentation ten (!) times. And this automatically leads to a high load on the crankshaft bearings and a decrease in their resource.

Not to mention the fact that the motor will run unevenly. As measurements have shown, the plane of the landing surface from the flywheel to the crankshaft is made with a slope, due to which the flywheel will describe the “eight” during rotation. And this, in turn, will lead to an increased load on the half thrust washers, which limit the longitudinal movement of the crankshaft. These structural elements and in normal mode sense significant loads the moment the clutch is released. Caused criticism from the experts and the cleanliness of the surface treatment. In particular, the roughness of the surface along which the friction lining of the clutch disc acts was doubled. In this case, one cannot learn to achieve a smooth transfer of torque, and the resulting shock loads will reduce the resource of other parts and transmission assemblies. In particular, the needle bearings of the drive shaft forks and the key connection will suffer.

Interesting results were obtained by measuring the hardness of the flywheel crown teeth. They turned out a bit “raw”, so the material that was not suitable in composition was also used to make the crown! Unsurprisingly, the technology-hardened starter wheel quickly deforms them, which in the future will lead to problems with engagement of the gear pair and make it difficult to start the engine.

Answer now – do you need spare parts that lead to a breakdown of the car? Absolutely not, especially since original and, a priori, high-quality, according to the design documentation, parts from a domestic car manufacturer are least affected by market fluctuations.
