Toyota and Suzuki are working on a B-SUV compact SUV for the Indian market. The models will be unified among themselves, but each will receive a design in the corporate style. The AutoCar India portal publishes unofficial renderings of new products and reports that both crossovers will debut in June or July 2022, and they will be assembled at a plant in the Indian state of Karnataka. Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos will become their main competitors in the local market.
Both crossovers (while they are coded D22 and YFG) are based on the Toyota TNGA-B platform (aka DNGA). They are predicted hybrid power plants: in entry-level versions it will be a gasoline engine and a starter-generator (the so-called “soft” hybrid), and in more expensive ones – a parallel-type hybrid installation consisting of an internal combustion engine and an electric motor.
AutoCar India specifies that India’s Maruti Suzuki will produce most of the components. The D22 and YFG will have the same body panels, and the crossovers will be the front end: the Toyota model will get tapered optics, connected by a double chrome element with a logo in the center, and Suzuki can be recognized by the signature grilles with a mesh structure.
Suzuki and Toyota have been cooperating since 2019 and practice badge engineering. For example, Suzuki sells a copy of the Toyota RAV4 under its own brand, but with a slightly rethought appearance, and Toyota has a “twin brother” Suzuki Vitara in its arsenal. In addition, companies are actively developing new electric vehicles for India, Japan and Europe.
