Russia and Belarus plan to respond to harsh Western sanctions with a new range of innovative diesel engines. The main goal is to gain technological sovereignty and replace declining imports. In addition, according to the plan, the project will also serve as the development of the automotive industry of the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which do not want to depend on China. And more about that – in the material of the portal “AvtoVzglyad”.

The program to create a “Eurasian” engine should be launched this year. Last week, representatives of the Eurasian Economic Commission visited the Yaroslavl region, where two important enterprises operate: the Yaroslavl and Tutaevsky motor plants. We got acquainted with the production, discussed the prospects.

“Unfortunately, we have such a picture. If the capacity of the motor market of our Eurasian Economic Union exceeds one billion rubles in money, then the volume of motor production at our enterprises is about 200 million. That’s only about 20%,” said Mikhail Myasnikovich, chairman of the board of directors of the Eurasian Economic Commission.

Not just engines

Before the introduction of severe economic sanctions, the Minsk Automobile Plant purchased up to 40% of units from Western companies. Now there is no possibility, and therefore the Belarusian enterprise switched to Yaroslavl engines. The situation is similar to the production of tractors in the neighboring republic. But the problem, as it turned out, has already been solved.

– Now a new engine is being developed – with a capacity of 350 horsepower. Of. and higher. In the near future the unit will be adapted for tractors. Appropriate tests are about to begin, – says Mr. Myasnikovich.

It is also necessary to solve the problem with fuel equipment, especially high-pressure pumps. But there is already progress in this direction. Last year, Andrey Matyushin, general manager of YaMZ, during the visit of the head of the region to one of the production sites, said that in producing high-pressure fuel pumps, even high-quality environmental friendliness, the enterprise was able to replace scarce foreign components with over switch to Russian ones, including those produced in the Yaroslavl region.

Big serious competitor

As planned, the program to create a “Eurasian” engine should serve the development of the automotive and tractor industry, as well as the road and agricultural machinery industry. It is planned that the production of the component base of the future diesel engine will be located in the EAEU countries in close cooperation with YaMZ. And the existing line of Yaroslavl diesel engines will be the basis.

– If we take, for example, the Minsk Automobile Plant, then the already existing line, which is produced at the Yaroslavl Motor Plant, fully meets the needs of the enterprise. But it needs to be replenished – to increase both the capacity of the units and the number. And the new program will help ensure technological sovereignty and replace declining imports, Myasnikovich notes.

Chinese diesel engines are called the main competitor of future engines. Reviews about the “heavenly” engines are complementary flattering. But not just about them. The “Indo-Asians” call the economic policy of the PRC reasonable and flexible: industrialists from China do not forget the “intermediate details” when supplying power units, which also stimulates demand.

Quality comes first

It is interesting that the program of the “Eurasian” diesel engine involves not only the improvement of current models and an increase in power, but also the creation of a fundamentally new power unit. They will rely on the performance of YaMZ, which last year presented and introduced an engine with increased power for tractors and combine harvesters. But unfortunately there are no details yet. All that the representatives of the Eurasian Commission say is: “engines must be very competitive – both in terms of technical characteristics and environmental standards, and, of course, in terms of cost.”

Before the program can be launched, however, it must be approved at the government level. The board has no doubt that the plan will succeed – after all, the experience in the diesel industry is enormous.

Another thing is that you cannot make a competitive and high quality product based on experience alone. The authorities understand this, and therefore good benefits are promised to the engineering companies that will participate in the project. Possible support mechanisms are called differently – and subsidizing bank interest rates and direct financial support. Although promising, as you know, does not mean getting married …
