Why alloy wheels should not be powder coated

Painting “pouring” is a whole business that is quite popular in Russia. And this is not surprising, because there are many people who want to update the appearance of the wheels, since time and sandblasting are merciless to car “shoes”. However, it is not worth rushing such a procedure, as it can lead to tragic consequences. And how exactly and why, says the AvtoVzglyad portal.

Small stones and road debris are the main enemies of rims. “Thanks” to them, the paint on the wheels fades over time, small chips appear. Tire workers also contribute: in their haste, they often hit the wheels with wrenches. As a result – large “wounds” around the mounting holes. Here we remember the high curbs that motorists often rub against.

How to return the “skating rinks” to their original appearance? Someone will remember the popular powder coating. Before such a procedure, the discs are washed with an abrasive and thoroughly dried, after which the remnants of the old coating are removed with “sandpaper” and the surface is degreased. The paint is applied with a special gun with an electrostatic effect. Then the wheels are placed in a special oven for about 15 minutes, where they are kept at temperatures of up to 200 degrees – to polymerize the new coating.

And here a sane car owner may have a question: is such “heat” harmful to the products? Of course it hurts. And strong.

The fact is that such products are obtained by pouring the alloy into a special mold, hardening and artificially aging it. Only in this way can a cast wheel obtain the required strength. And with every strong additional heating, the structure of the metal is broken.

Add to that the natural wear and tear and the constant local load the discs are subjected to as the car winds up for miles – we get a real-time bomb. Such a “fresh” old set can simply crumble on the road, leading to a complete loss of control and a serious accident. We will not talk about welding with argon at all: the Association of European Wheel Manufacturers (EUWA) categorically advises against it.

So what to do if you don’t want to throw away your “shoes”, but the appearance makes you sad? Apply acrylic paint to the products. Unlike powder, it is liquid and that has advantages. The compositions are sold in aerosol cans – that is, you can get to work immediately after removing the old layer and degreasing the surface. And heating in this case is not necessary. So you don’t have to worry about the sudden “death” of the wheel.
