Why it’s dangerous to buy a premium BMW 3 Series today

“Treshka” is a traditional Bavarian bestseller, on which the well-being of the automaker largely depends. Therefore, the model is changed without revolutions and cardinal innovations in technology. But this does not save the problems that certainly arise during operation. The AvtoVzglyad portal tells about the characteristic “sores” of the BMW 3 Series.

The body of the F30 was released in 2011. Four years later they carried out a restyling, and in 2019 another generation of the model came on the assembly line. Since BMWs are still very popular in Russia, there are many used four-doors for sale. Even with a low mileage, because during the crisis of 2014 they were bought “in reserve” and only then sold. But the shortcomings of the “German” should be known.

So the paintwork is weak and chips appear too often. In advanced cases, the paint even falls off in pieces. This usually happens around the rear wheel arches. But the metal is resistant to corrosion, which somehow saves the situation. It is also disappointing that anthers and aerodynamic screens on the underside of the cars come off without incident. Headlamp covers crack at the seams.

As for the power units, we do not recommend buying a version with a 1.6-liter turbo engine of the N13B16 series (power options 136 and 170 forces). Problems can start after 70,000 km. Due to malfunctions of the crankcase ventilation diaphragm valve, idling is lost and lubricant consumption increases sharply. After 100,000 km, the timing chain and dampers have time to wear out. Since the latter are plastic, wear products clog the oil receiver mesh. That is, the engine is threatened with a major overhaul. And with a sudden failure of the solenoid valve that controls the pressure of the oil pump, the engine usually turns into scrap. So at 60,000 km it is better to replace the valve preventively.

But that is not everything. The lubrication system is sensitive to coking. Local overheating of the cylinder head is also common, leading to crack formation. Therefore, the 2-liter supercharged “diesel” of the N47D20 series is considered the most reliable of all engines. It develops 184 hp. Of. The weak points are only the crankshaft liners and the distribution drive.

The eight-speed “automatic” is quite unpretentious and “feeds” 300,000 km. You just have to change the oil every 60,000 km and keep an eye on the plastic oil pan, which can start to leak.

If the “treshka” has an all-wheel drive transmission, then it should be treated with more attention. After all, if the cardan shaft crosses collapse, then the engine crankcase, which is located next to it, can simply break. The weak point in the suspension is the rear silent blocks of the lower wishbones. After 80,000 kilometers they start to creak. Otherwise, there will be no problems along the way.

In general, if you’re planning to buy a BMW, don’t mess with pre-styling versions. Cars made after 2015 are more reliable.
