It seems that nothing in Russia’s punitive anti-alcohol laws has been radically tightened recently, and the number of crashes at the hands of drunk drivers in the country continues to fall steadily. At least that is what the latest traffic police statistics show.

– By the end of 2022, the number of road accidents involving drivers with signs of intoxication fell by 8.2% to 14,428. 3,560 people were killed in these accidents, which is 7.9% less than a year earlier. The number of crashes involving drunk drivers fell by 8.3%. 11,729 such cases were recorded, in which 3,445 people died, which is 6.9% less than last year, the main road safety directorate of the Ministry of the Interior of Russia reported.

Note that such a result clearly cannot be regarded as a result of any novelties in the legislation. Police statistics show that exactly the same trend was observed a year earlier. In 2021, a decrease in the number of “drunken” accidents by the same 8% was recorded. So we can hope that 2023 will also show a similar trend in the reduction of “alcohol accidents” – if no new significant disasters occur neither in Russia nor in the world. Although, as we can see, even an event like the CBO cannot affect the “eight percent” trend of reducing the number of “drunk” crashes.

We add that the number of citizens caught driving under the influence is also falling. For 2022, the traffic police counted 535,000 such cases, which is 2.4% less than a year earlier. In addition, the number of drivers who refused a medical examination fell by 2.9% to 171,600 drivers.
