Have you ever paid attention to the speedometers of the cars you drive? While most cars have similar values, some cars show the speed limit “Can this car really go that fast?” you can sigh.

So let’s ask; Is that car going that fast? It won’t work. At this point another question inevitably arises; Why do cars have a speed limit above the vehicle’s capacity?

In other words, why does the speedometer indicate the maximum speed of 240 km/h for cars that cannot even go faster than 200 km/h?

This There are two main reasons; first, producers’ efforts to reduce costs, and second, consumers’ desire for more power.

Car manufacturers, in order not to increase costs, they produce they don’t take new measurements for every vehicle. For this reason, most car manufacturers use the speedometers of their high-performance models in their mid-range models to start mass production.

Although this situation partly misinforms consumers, car owners are satisfied with this situation. Although the drivers have the same performance, the speedometer is prefers higher value vehicles.

Therefore, while the method used by car manufacturers to reduce costs is not intentional, turned into a commercial sales gimmick. Manufacturers realized that consumers wanted to see a higher speed limit and designed the gauges this way.

At first glance, it may seem like ‘the buyer is happy, the seller is happy’, but that’s not exactly the case. Stewart Stewart Reed, of the Department of Transportation Design at the Art Center College of Design, says higher speedometer limits encourage drivers to go faster.

According to Reed, when the speed limit is low, when drivers are driving at a normal speed, the indicator looks up and the driver is convinced that he has a normal speed. When the speed limit is high, since the turn signal is tilted to the left at normal speed, the driver thinks he is driving slowly and accelerating.

As a result, car manufacturers avoid costs with indicators that do not accurately reflect the vehicle’s capabilities. Even though car owners know it’s not true when they see it. they feel that the vehicle is more powerful. Drivers who see the turn signal tilted to the left think they are not turning on the vehicle correctly and go faster and the result can be catastrophic.
