In the Murzilki Live program on Avtoradio, the deputy head of the traffic safety propaganda department of the traffic police, police colonel Sergei Khrantskevich, spoke about traffic accidents involving children. Portal “AvtoVzglyad” quotes his words.

Over the past five years, the number of children killed in road accidents has gradually decreased. However, the complete abolition of this column of police statistics is still a long way off. So, in the first two months of 2023, 1,700 accidents involving minors occurred in Russia. More than 1,800 children were injured and 68 traffic accidents were fatal. In addition, in 64 of the 68 cases, the death of a child was the result of a traffic violation by drivers.

– Statistics say that the deaths of 75% of the children killed in accidents last year are on the conscience of the drivers of the cars they were in. Second in terms of fatalities are children-pedestrians. And so far the smallest, but growing every year group of children is cyclists, children on scooters and children driving cars, – said Sergey Khrantskevich.

He explained that accidents with a sad outcome for a child most often occur as a result of the car exceeding the speed limit. Drivers lose control and cars fly into oncoming traffic, go off the road, flip over. At such times, children die most often, the representative of the traffic police emphasized. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that adults often do not use special seats and other restraints to protect children.

According to Khrantskevich, many parents abuse the fact that children older than 7 years old can be transported in the back seat without using a car seat or booster seat. Even with the belt fastened, the small passenger does not go across the chest (as expected), but along the neck. As a result, the child is not actually restrained in a collision and the belt around the neck only increases the risk of a life-threatening injury for him.
