Severe sanctions are forcing authorities to rethink the automotive industry’s development strategy. To support domestic manufacturers, they want to be allowed to produce cars of lower environmental classes. The Ministry of Natural Resources believes that such a decision could significantly worsen air quality, especially in large cities.

According to the TASS agency, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources believes that air quality in major urban areas could deteriorate if the Ministry of Industry and Trade lowers the environmental class of new cars.

Recall that the authorities have been discussing the possibility of lowering the certification requirements for new cars manufactured in Russia for more than a month. In particular to lift the current Euro-5 eco-standards and switch to Euro-3 and lower.

The Ministry of Natural Resources notes that such a transition would cause enormous damage to the environment. And it will be the largest in densely populated cities and metropolitan areas, where the air will get much worse.

It’s no secret that car emissions seriously affect the environment. For example, in cities such as Krasnoyarsk, Omsk and Chelyabinsk, cars are responsible for more than 30% of the total amount of harmful emissions.
