In this month we sold 69,913 new passenger cars. This is only 11.4% less than in March last year. At the same time, the decrease in January was 59% compared to the same period in 2022, in February – 43%. And by the way, this is a trend!
And in April, we are most likely promised long-awaited growth. And I would say it’s just inevitable. To understand the true price of the current auto market win, it makes sense to recap what happened in the winter and spring of last year. Because our memory is short and it effectively removes unpleasant memories.
2022 is off to a slow start. The first two months showed a 4.3% drop in revenue compared to 2021, also far from a record. Yet more than 100,000 new cars were found by owners in Russia every month. And in March there was a catastrophic collapse associated with the indecent démarche of foreign car brands. Sales collapsed at once by 63%!
In a strange way, we are now pleased that the market was another 11% below this bar in March. That is, in a year he was able to recover not only to pre-crisis volumes, but at least to the level of the first shock month. As for April, last year’s collapse was even stronger there – the decline was 78.5% compared to 2021. Only 32,706 passenger cars were sold, so we almost doubled this anti-record, and nothing will most likely stop us from next month to enjoy the growth of the market.

It is clear that making comparisons with last year’s failure and drawing conclusions based on them, and even more so making forecasts, is a thankless task to say the least. But some guidelines are still needed. A comparison with the previous month seems obvious, but it is very incorrect, as the buying activity varies greatly during the different times of the year.
Nevertheless, we will try to follow this path, but at the same time we will try to make it as objective as possible. So, for the past seven years, March passenger car sales in the Russian Federation annually exceeded February sales by 18% – 36%. The lowest value was in 2018, the highest in 2020. In the current 2023, the market grew by 24.5% – on average as before. So it can be argued that, at least at the moment, passenger car sales are not growing faster and they are not going to catch up at all.
