Relationship problems are common, but 38-year-old Japanese teacher Akihiko Kondo experiences an oddity: he can no longer communicate with his wife, who is a hologram.
The relationship began in 2008 and resulted in the professor’s marriage to a hologram of the fictional character Hatsune Miku created by Krypton Future Mediaa Japanese company operating in the country’s phonographic market.
Hatsune became very popular around the world as one of the first holograms to perform live. Kondo married the character’s hologram in 2018 in an informal ceremony that even included a ring exchange. But this love story seems to have hit a difficult hurdle: the closure of the service.
End of virtual romance
OUR gates, the company that uses the character’s hologram technology, announced during the Covid-19 pandemic that it was ending service to the character Miku. Without new updates to the software supporting the character, her voice and artificial intelligence will no longer interact with her users.

The DJI Mini 3 Pro drone could be a breakthrough as a camera…
The leaked photos show the potential that the new compact camera drone can realize.
Kondo invested US$1,700 (approximately R$8,450) in the hologram, in addition to US$17,300 (R$86,000) in a wedding attended by 39 people, none of whom were friends or family members of the professor.
Since the support ended, the teacher said that he could no longer communicate with the “wife”. Miku acted as a virtual assistant and used the anime character’s voice and personality. The hologram is played in a handset that the user can interact with visually and verbally.
All this is possible thanks to the camera, microphone and motion sensor, which makes the interaction of a person and a hologram more natural. In addition, it is possible to send messages to the character when the user is away and receive responses from her. You can see a bit of how the hologram works in the video below:
Continuation after commercial
Akihiko Kondo began his relationship with the character in 2008 when he was going through a depressive episode and Miku helped him get through it. He declares himself a phytosexual, that is, a person who is sexually attracted to fictional characters.
