The era of new cars seems to be over – the era of “second hand” has begun. And a used car, as you know, needs more frequent and thorough maintenance, so it’s time to move beyond the oil candle filter schedule and study the forums. Especially the braking part. What is important to know about the brake system service, says the AvtoVzglyad portal.

Years ago, when cars were made entirely by engineers and the design department was a dusty room in the far corner of the store, every car had a maintenance schedule. There they described in black and white all the necessary procedures that must be followed so that the “iron horse” still passes the prescribed million kilometers, even walks.

The lines about lubricants and filters could not even be numbered, this is clear to everyone, but then there were very curious operations that somehow escaped the ardent gaze of the driver. This happened due to the popularity of the “blue screen”, from which they proclaimed the need for regular updates of the car assembly. Like, why trade for all kinds of tinsel – buy a new car, and that’s it.

Now you can forget about this approach: most people can’t afford a new car, so we focus on maintaining existing cars. And if so, we return to the list of necessary operations and find out that the brakes, it turns out, are not just a disc and pads. There is also a mechanism that “marries” this pair – called a caliper. Drum or disc – it doesn’t matter. Fundamentally different – it also needs periodic maintenance.

Drum brakes are a little more durable and much less common, their time has passed, but disc brakes are everything to us. Let’s talk about it. Disks have a lot of advantages – skilled people get the job done, for example – but there are also disadvantages. First, they need more attention. And this is by no means always a replacement of pads.

Megatons of road salt that fall on our roads every year, sharpness and dexterity of the main driver, endless traffic jams – these are the three reasons why the braking mechanism should be inspected regularly, at least annually. Unfortunately, more often than not, it remains with diagnostics alone. The photo below shows the elements of the braking mechanism, which were replaced only a year ago. For 12 months they failed and the caliper itself began to wedge: it was lucky that they located the problem in the beginning, because the delay could lead to a complete lock of the wheel and firing.

The anthers were torn, although the car did not get out of the asphalt and let moisture through, which immediately did its job with both the piston and the guides. The piston was new, the “guides” were lubricated with high-temperature grease. Didn’t help. Rust is a quick, instantaneous process, in the case of a wheel: warming up, cooling down in puddles, heating up again. We add an eye at traffic lights, where a nimble taxi driver changes the map of the entire lane in an instant, and an abrupt stop for the sake of a pedestrian who decides to cross four lanes outside the zebra without taking his eyes off his smartphone .

The result is a replacement. Blocks too, by the way, because they are ground asymmetrically. The cost of the operation increases, and the driver pays, because there is nowhere to go. The second important conclusion – the diagnosis of the braking system – from fluid to caliper – is as mandatory as changing the oil. It is almost impossible to catch wedges “on the go”: squeaking, increased fuel consumption, worse acceleration or overheating of the brake disc are not felt. We saw it because we went to look.

Brakes are the most important element of road safety, so sparing and postponing maintenance is not worth it. Brake pads, a repair kit and new guides are cheaper than bodywork, optics and gray hair. And for those who are going to travel a lot in the summer, think carefully: the cars around us have not become stronger and more reliable this year, so you have to rely only on yourself. And on your brakes.
