There was a time when social media didn’t exist. Looking back, it seems almost impossible to imagine a world without these platforms that connect people around the world. The Internet, born in the 1970s, came into being to optimize the human ability to communicate, and it has played that role, for better or worse.
On this historical journey, I invite you to reflect on the essence of man and the inner need for social connection. After all, it was social interactions that shaped civilizations, improved communication, and ultimately shaped the digital landscape we know today.
Although it is possible to avoid contact with other people, the result is usually not beneficial. Through social networks, we have managed to connect almost all corners of the world, which was made possible thanks to our innate propensity to communicate.
In terms of technology, the first social networks appeared in the 1990s, Six Degrees, launched in 1997, was one of the pioneers, allowing you to create personal profiles, exchange messages between users and publish posts. However, due to the immaturity of the Internet at the time and the lack of a clear focus, Six Degrees failed.
In 2002, Friendster appeared, replacing Six Degrees and becoming the first social network to reach a million users. Introduced features such as a list of friends, interest tabs and photo albums. However, due to the rapid development of the social media market, Friendster’s success was short-lived.
In 2003, MySpace became one of the first major social networks to allow users to customize their pages. However, Facebook was launched in 2004, initially as a niche social network for college students in the US and Canada. The vision and early investments in Facebook showed that the platform was destined for success.
In Brazil, Orkut stood out from the others. Created by a Google employee in 2004, Orkut was hugely popular among Brazilians, but over time it has been overshadowed by Facebook’s global growth.
Twitter, launched in 2007, stood out for its focus on quick and instant interactions limited to 140 characters. LinkedIn, a networking space for professionals, and YouTube, a video sharing platform, were launched in 2003 and 2006, respectively.
Instagram was created in 2010 with a focus on visual content. Instagram’s hallmark was image filters, a feature that other social networks didn’t have at the time.
In the east, WeChat appeared in 2011, a text, voice, and video messaging platform that is still the mainstream application in China.
Currently, the most used social networks are Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and WeChat.
Twitter was born in 2007. This platform had the distinction of being a place for quick and ephemeral interaction limited to 140 characters – a proposal that has undoubtedly kept the social network active until today. But of course, it took several algorithm updates to keep the platform afloat. Twitter responded to the growing public interest by creating a wall of trending topics with the most used hashtags, a strategy that remains effective today.
Also around this time were LinkedIn (2003) and YouTube (2006). YouTube was trying to become a more trusted social network when it was acquired by Google through Google Plus. However, the attempt to force users to create a Google Plus account when signing up for YouTube was not well received, causing the strategy to fail.
In 2010, Instagram appeared, which at that time was independent of Facebook. The platform stood out for its focus on visual content and the inclusion of image filters, which was unheard of on other social networks at the time. Instagram’s original strategy was to encourage content sharing on other networks to increase its reach. With an optimized photo wall and clear focus on images, the platform has provided an easy and enjoyable experience for those who want to share their photos.
Meanwhile, in the East, WeChat appeared in China in 2011. Today, WeChat is the main application in China offering text, voice and video messaging services, as well as payments.
Currently, the most used social networks are Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, WeChat and WhatsApp. While widely used, WhatsApp is not considered a social network in the most common definition of the term.
The last two decades have been marked by the revolution of social networks, services that have changed the means of communication. Today it is hard to imagine life without these platforms, especially with smartphones and other portable devices making it easy to access them at any time.
However, this constant evolution also raises some concerns. While social media and the Internet in general have brought many benefits and conveniences, it seems that we have reached a point where the acceleration may go too far. Things are changing so fast that it’s hard to predict what the next step in social media will be. But one thing is for sure: something new will appear, and it probably won’t take long.
Thus, the history of social media is marked by continuous innovation and rapid change. These platforms have changed the way we communicate and interact, for better or for worse. However, it’s important to remain critical and aware as we move forward into this increasingly fast-paced digital age.
