This is a rather banal story. At some point, the low fluid icon in the windshield washer on the dash lights up, even if the car owner just poured it there. Some of the motorists do not pay attention to such an alarm about a problem that does not actually exist. And a false indication quite annoying. Because of what they have to go to a car service. Usually they are there, without thinking twice, “meaning” to replace the washing machine level sensor.

On old VAZ models, sensors are used for only a few hundred rubles. And with more or less modern foreign cars, buying a new unit will cost several thousand rubles, which is not planned for such a waste. If your car is “fresh” enough and you’re sure that relatively no one has hit the old sensor with a hammer, you shouldn’t run to the store for a new one. Maybe the problem can be solved more budget. Most of these sensors belong to one of two design types: float and contact. In the first case, the “lamp on the net” lights up when the sensor’s movable float, along with the liquid level, falls below a certain mark.

The second type of sensor is activated when one of the two electrical contacts, immersed in liquid, is exposed to air. In this case, the current between them stops through the “washing machine”, leading to an alarm on the dashboard. But both types of sensors can suffer from a condition called limescale. They appear in the tank when the car owner often uses plain water with a high content of dissolved minerals as a detergent.

The “brick” that comes out can block the float in the lower position or become an electrical insulator for contacts. The result is a false signal about the emptiness of the tank. In fact, the problem can be easily solved without replacing the sensor: it is enough to dissolve and remove limescale. This should be done wherever there is a hose connected to the water supply at hand – at a car wash or in your backyard.

Dissolve a sachet of citric acid in a few liters of water. Pour it all into the wash tank. We wait 10 minutes for the “lemon” deposits to dissolve. Then we insert the water hose as deep as possible into the neck of the tank and let the water run. In this way we spend another 10 minutes cleaning the tank of acid residues. And then we rejoice at the disappearance of the sensor false alarm.
