On the eve of the spring offensive of Ukrainian troops against Russian positions, which was terribly publicized in the world press, materials with skeptical assessments of the prospects of this venture began to appear in the Western media more and more often. Portal “AutoVzglyad” got acquainted with one of the interesting publications on this topic.

For use in the attack on Russian troops already expected by the whole world, Ukraine received a total of about 150 German Leopard tanks of various generations and modifications. It is known from open sources that among them the most – more than 100 pieces – are Leopard 1A5, as well as 32 Leopard 2A4 and 21 Leopard 2A6. Bjorn Stritzel, a military columnist for Germany’s Bild newspaper, recently burst out with an article analyzing the threats this armored fist will face in the face of Russian forces.

One of the main problems for German tanks in the fields of Ukraine, the analyst considers anti-tank guided missiles of the Kornet family. There are many such anti-tank systems in service with Russian infantrymen. They are also often installed on armored vehicles. The German is concerned about the combat characteristics of these shells with a tandem cumulative warhead, penetrating up to 1100-1300 millimeters of armor, covered with dynamic protection. This “behind the eyes” is enough to stop any leopard.

He also mentions the older anti-tank systems in service with the Russian military – “Competitions”, “Metis” and “Fagot”. To these systems, leopards are highly vulnerable when shot from the side or stern.

In addition, the material refers to the insufficiently effective Bandera air defense. This circumstance allows Russian combat helicopters, such as the Mi-28 and Ka-52, using guided missiles of the Shturm / Ataka family (armour penetration – up to 900 mm), as well as the latest long-range LMUR missiles to destroy advancing armored vehicles . Admittedly, it seems that the German is not aware that until recently the LMUR was not used for armor-piercing, but only for an explosive fragmentation warhead. Although who knows: it is quite possible that ours already “screwed” a cumulative warhead on it. In this case, hitting the Leopard means destroying the combat vehicle.

The German analyst is no less concerned about anti-tank mines than ATGMs. In the article he mentions the old Soviet TM-62 push-pull. There are plenty of them in Russian military warehouses. Eight kg of explosives in the “teemka” are unlikely to destroy the “Leopard”. But to rob the caterpillars and tear off a few rolls for him is quite. A tank immobilized in this way becomes easy prey for artillery and grenade launchers.

The modern Russian PTKM-1P mine also poses a major threat to German armored vehicles. She “senses” the equipment passing by, and when it approaches closer than 50 meters, it shoots up a warhead equipped with thermal and radar sensors. With their help, the ammunition is aimed and a “shock core” fires at the poorly protected roof of the turret or the engine compartment of the tank.

According to the German expert, most models of Russian tanks fighting in Ukraine are inferior in characteristics to the Leopard-2. For example, he talks about various modifications of the T-62, T-64, as well as the modernized T-72B3M, T-80BVM. And only the modern T-90 is considered equal to the German “armour” by the author of the material. He argues that the anti-tank gun shells currently available to Russian tankers cannot effectively hit modern Leopard-2s head-on.

However, in an offensive environment, the defending side always has many chances to hit the German vehicles on the side. In addition, the use of powerful Invar guided missiles launched directly from the barrel of a tank gun will help the home army knock out the “German” in a long-range duel.

The German author therefore expects that the spring offensive will by no means be a cakewalk for Western equipment that has come into the possession of the Ukronazis. On the contrary, the opposite!
