The Yuga Labs team has withdrawn the smart contract that allows it to stream an unlimited number of NFTs from the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) collection, a year after it was first promised.

“The contract holder is now burned. We’ve wanted this for a long time, but we didn’t do it for security reasons. We feel comfortable doing it,” the project co-founder wrote under the pseudonym EmperorTomatoKetchup.

As proof, he disclosed a process where the developers removed the possibility of publishing.

Blockworks media platform experts reminded the Yuga Labs team of the problem:

“It has been reported that a private key can leave an infinite number of Bored Apes.”

In case the owner’s wallet was hacked, this made it possible for the attackers to flood the market with coins and lower the price. At the time of writing, the cheapest BAYC in the OpenSea market is 69.69 ETH (~$126,835), while the most expensive is 18,880 ETH (~$34.4 million).

For the first time, users noticed that the BAYC code includes the possibility of issuing NFTs in excess of 10,000 tokens declared in June 2021.

Thanks, we just talked. Frankly, we will never call this function again, and we plan to revoke ownership in the next few days,” the project team replied.

They fulfilled their promise only on 7 June 2022.

Three days ago, hackers broke into the project’s Discord servers and posted phishing links on their communication channels.

In March, the attackers carried out a similar successful attack on the Bored Ape Yacht Club Instagram account.

Recall, in February, a BuzzFeed journalist anonymized two of the four co-founders of the NFT collection under the pseudonyms GordonGoner and Gargamel. It is unknown who is hiding under the aliases EmperorTomatoKetchup and NoSass.
