Members of the decentralized autonomous organization Tornado DAO urged the community to hire a team of lawyers to combat US sanctions imposed on the cryptocurrency mixer. Reported by The Block.
Tornado DAO manages the liquidity of the protocol. According to SnapShot, the organization has more than 9,000 members, but only 163 are active members.
One of them advised the DAO to raise funds on behalf of Tornado Cash, hire a team of attorneys and, if necessary, file a lawsuit in the US Supreme Court.
According to the author of the initiative, the successful lifting of sanctions will set a precedent for other services that ensure the privacy of cryptocurrencies.
Another community member noted that any legal defense funds should be managed on-chain by the DAO leadership. It was suggested that the law firm that would represent the society in the case be chosen by voting.
Some participants were skeptical of this discussion. MakerDAO delegate Chris Black pointed out that due to the absence of a legal entity called Tornado Cash, the fundraiser would not be considered legitimate.
“Tornado Cash is software code and the best approach would be to fight for the human right to privacy,” he added.
Community members also called for a fork of the Tornado Cash protocol and the creation of alternative mixer options based on the source code. However, experts believe that, despite the apparent increase in decentralization, the new services cannot guarantee users a significant amount of liquidity. Since the implementation of the sanctions, the protocol has recorded an almost 79% drop in deposits.
“To be effective, a privacy protocol needs a “centralized” application that is used by as many people as possible. Otherwise, it’s much easier to anonymize individual users,” commented a Tornado DAO member.
CoinDesk writes that the official Tornado Cash website is currently down.
“Most people will have difficulty accessing our website as it has been shut down,” says the service’s Telegram channel.
According to numerous posts on Twitter, the cryptomixer’s Discord channel is also down.
Recall that Tornado Cash is included in the sanctions list OFAC On suspicion of laundering over $7 billion in cryptocurrencies.
Earlier in Amsterdam, law enforcement arrested the alleged developer of the service. According to unconfirmed reports, we are talking about Alexei Pertsev.
