According to Clarín, one of the main candidates for the presidency of Argentina, Javier Miley, has been sued for allegedly promoting a cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme.

In December 2021, the author and libertarian economist posted a video of his visit to the office of investment platform CoinX on Instagram for his 1.3 million followers.

The company has provided its clients with up to 8% monthly income from investments in cryptocurrency. He claimed to use artificial intelligence, experienced traders bots and asset diversification to generate high profits.

“They are revolutionizing the way they invest to help Argentines avoid inflation. From now on you can simulate your investments in pesos, dollars or cryptocurrencies and profit. “Write to CoinX on my behalf so they can recommend the best for you,” Milay said in the post.

Earlier, the politician spoke out in support of bitcoin, calling central banks a scam.

CoinX has been running an active social media campaign for several months. But since March, the platform has stopped paying investors. The company ceased operations in June after Argentina’s National Securities Commission issued a warning about the lack of approval to do business.

The platform did not return all funds to users. According to Juan Pablo Chiesa, the lawyer who sued Milei, we’re talking about compensation of up to 40 million pesos (~$293,000).

The lawyer noted that for some users, the economist’s statements as a profiler have become an incentive to invest in CoinX.

After a public suspicion of the platform emerged, Miley and her representatives made attempts to distance themselves from the alleged fraudulent scheme. The politician said he was meeting with the company for advice on business strategy.

According to Chiesa, if he proves that we are talking about ordinary paid advertising on social networks and shows the relevant contract, then questions about Milei’s joint and several responsibilities will disappear. But the lawyer is sure that such a document does not exist.

Recall that in the United States, he sued billionaire Mark Cuban for promoting a Ponzi scheme associated with crypto broker Voyager.

In October 2021, the company signed a five-year partnership with Cuba’s Dallas Mavericks NBA club.

Voyager filed for bankruptcy in July.
