Canadian politician and supporter of the first cryptocurrency, Pierre Poillèvre, has won the race for the seat of the country’s Conservative Party leader. CoinDesk writes about it.

Poillèvre won 68% of the vote and now plans to run for the post of Prime Minister of Canada in 2025. The politician actively supports bitcoin – he previously said that citizens should have the freedom to use digital assets.

“Canada needs less financial control from politicians and bankers and more financial freedom for the people. This applies to the ownership and use of cryptocurrencies, tokens, smart contracts and decentralized finance.”

Poillièvre also announced plans to make Canada the blockchain capital of the world.

In March 2022, the newly elected leader of the conservatives came to Tahini’s restaurant, where he bought shawarma for the first cryptocurrency, as part of the spring election campaign.

Earlier, local media reported, citing financial statements, that Poillèvre holds a position in Purpose Investments, a leading Canadian exchange-traded fund (ETF) based on digital gold.

The vehicle became the first bitcoin ETF registered in North America. Trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange with the BTCC code began on February 18. The Purpose Bitcoin ETF raised $421 million in the first two days after its launch.

In June, the fund outflow amounted to 24,510 BTC. As a result AUM structures decreased by 51% to 23,273 BTC. According to Arcane Research, the situation with the Purpose ETF could be the catalyst for the price of the first cryptocurrency to drop to $17,800.

This isn’t the first time Bitcoin supporters have been promoted to high political posts. In 2020, businessman and former US presidential candidate Andrew Yang, calling for a transparent and clear regulation of the crypto industry, decided to run for mayor of New York.

He promised to make the city a hub for bitcoin and other digital assets, but withdrew from the race.

Recall that a similar statement was made by his rival Eric Adams.

After winning the election, the politician announced his intention to receive the top three salaries in digital gold and called for the study of cryptocurrencies in schools.
