The robot’s design and functionality are reminiscent of iconic characters from the popular Transformers series. The Multimodal Mobile Morphobot, or M4 for short, is the size of a remote-controlled car but packs an impressive array of features.

Equipped with sophisticated electronics, engines and a compact computer system, the M4 has the necessary decision-making capabilities to determine the optimal shape for a given situation.

Large wheels designed to quickly transform into drone-like rotors allow the robot to take off in seconds. This unique ability allows the M4 to navigate rough terrain or climb steep slopes, while the rear wheels propel it forward off the ground. On rough or uneven surfaces, the robot can stand on two wheels and use them as makeshift legs, providing stability and increasing maneuverability.

More about development

The M4 project was the result of a collaboration between Maury Garib, a professor specializing in aerospace and bioengineering at Cal Institute of Technology, and Alireza Ramezani, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Northeastern University.

The research team displayed various visual representations of various morphobot forms, accompanied by cute illustrations of the animals that inspired the project, including meerkats and walruses.

Powered by the Jetson Nano processor, an affordable miniature computer designed by Nvidia specifically for robotics, the M4 displays eight different types of motion. Using artificial intelligence algorithms, the robot autonomously evaluates the environment and makes informed decisions to ensure optimum performance. According to Gharib, Morphobot’s abilities could be invaluable in scenarios such as transporting the wounded to hospitals or exploring extraterrestrial landscapes.

Caltech has a wealth of experience in developing engaging and versatile robots. His previous achievements include LEONARDO, a bipedal robot with propellers instead of arms to help fly and balance while walking. This particular creation makes a strange sound that evokes images of mischievous little ghosts. The facility also features a launchable transforming drone that has proven their determination to push the limits of robotics technology.
