Just a few months ago, I had the opportunity to analyze Huawei’s foldable phone, the Huawei Mate X3, while it was turned off, in normal phone format. Having inherited most of the hardware from this device, the Huawei Mate X5 is now official.
The refresh of the stellar foldable was presented in China with the feature that if we want a new processor, a slightly refined design and a new panel, we have to bet on the version with the largest internal storage.

A new version that is somewhat new
When we look at the dimensions of this phone, we understand that: the base is exactly the same as found on the Huawei Mate X3. The dimensions of the panels and the technologies used are also the same, and even the configuration of the cameras does not seem to have changed. It repeats in this way with a 6.4 + 7.85-inch dual panel with a much friendlier 20.9:9 aspect ratio compared to some of its direct competitors.
Huawei did not provide data on the processor, but Chinese sources suggest that it will use the same Kirin 9000S, produced in SIMC’s seven nanometer process. It’s a big step forward for Huawei in the Chinese semiconductor industry, which means they’re a breath of fresh air: they can go back to using 5G chips because they don’t have American technology.
The only tangible change in this model is the battery. Slightly bigger but with the same fast charge
The only change in this new model comes in the battery. Increases from 4,800mAh to 5,060mAh. Fast charging is still 66W and wireless 50W is the same as in the previous model.
A feature of this phone is that in the collector’s version the internal panel has changed from using LTPS technology to using LTPO technology, although the screens are the same. This means that the refresh rate can be reduced to 1 Hz, thereby reducing power consumption. The panel cladding has also been improved by converting Kunlun Glass to another basalt-based glass.
The brightness of the internal displays has also been improved. The verdict is pretty bizarre, so we summarize it this way.
- Huawei Mate X5 collector’s edition: 1,800 nits for both panels.
- Huawei Mate X5 16+512GB: 1,200 nits for internal display. Externally 1200 nits.
- Huawei Mate X5 12 + 512GB: 1,000 nits for internal display. 1,200 nits for external display.
The decision to offer more nit and LTPO technology based on paying for more RAM and storage is something we haven’t seen before. A Huawei strategy for consumers to adopt higher-cost versions.
For the rest, we’re dealing with the same phone, with minor differences in the camera module and slightly sharper lines on the body.
