To the surprise of Europeans, Huawei introduced its flagship Huawei Mate 60 Pro on August 29, completely silently, without revealing the processor (we will understand why later) and apparently without a strategy beyond its own country: Huawei is there from Spain There was no information about this launch .
What seemed like a prudent move with a certain lack of significance for the flagship turned out to be a studied strategy with a clear goal: to conquer China and launch a torpedo at the United States.
bypassing US ban. There are two keys to the US vetoing Huawei. The first of these is the restriction on the use of Google services; This is something that puts the Chinese giant at a clear competitive disadvantage compared to other companies when we talk about the European region. Huawei collapsed in Spain, closing its main stores and completely disappearing from the main manufacturers’ map in terms of sales.
However, this limitation has no practical significance in China. Google services are not used there and are not even installed on the phones sold there. Huawei continues to update and optimize HarmonyOS in its home country, ensuring that the software does not become a hindrance.
Overcoming the second challenge. The second key to the veto has to do with chipsets. Currently, the main production processes were in the hands of TSMC, but Huawei could not use any technology associated with American companies. The company has been partnering with SMIC, China’s largest semiconductor manufacturer, for some time.
This 2023 they managed to hit the table and collect the ball of oxygen they need most: saving chips with 5G. Thanks to SMIC and its first chip with seven nanometer process, Huawei is once again trying to compete at a high level with the 5G processor produced in 2023.

A Huawei Mate 60 Pro born by and for China. Huawei Mate 60 Pro looks like this sweeping china. They sold 800,000 units in the first week of launch, a significant increase from the half a million units sold in the first weeks of its predecessor, the Mate 50 Pro.
Huawei shares rose 10% after launch, and the real purpose of this phone goes beyond sales: The Mate 60 Pro is a victory over the US. Conquering the European market, where it is impossible to fight without Google services, does not seem to be the short-term goal of the Chinese manufacturer.
According to Counterpoint Research’s data, Huawei is outside the top 5 manufacturers in China, led by OPPO, Vivo and Apple. Despite this, there is a rather interesting fact: its built-in device base means it remains the number one manufacturer. With these data, we refer to the total of all devices sold this year and previous years: adding older devices, Huawei remains the first manufacturer in China.
Crossfire again. The US Department of Commerce announced that it is investigating Huawei and new semiconductor technology. They don’t seem to understand that despite the sanctions, the company managed to develop a new 5G chip.
The United States is trying to stop China’s technological development with sanctions on the semiconductor industry. The Biden Administration wants to prevent China from gaining access to the most advanced circuit manufacturing technologies, thus improving its military capabilities.
The situation remains negative. Huawei managed to launch a small missile towards the USA. It has proven it can develop its own 5G chips and is quietly starting to increase sales. Even so, staying in the top 5 is a challenge as they have fallen out and Honor (currently the fourth manufacturer in China) has taken over at home.
SMIC’s lithography is seven nanometers, and 3-nanometer processors will begin to appear in 2023. Despite this, the company is keen to escape exclusion, and this grand alliance with SMIC appears to be just the first step.
