Samsung wants artificial intelligence to play a leading role in its processors for future generations. The AI race is heating up, with Google continuing its lead with the Pixel 8 Pro and manufacturers like Motorola cutting their teeth with some advancements.

Park Yong-in, president of Samsung Electronics, explained the company’s plans to integrate such functions into its processors at the SEDEX 2023 semiconductor fair. Exynos will be an important part of this.

“Samsung Electronics’ goal is artificial intelligence in the device.” Yong-in’s keynote speech at the fair revealed Samsung’s master plan. In times of high energy costs, it tells some interesting facts: Development of NPU It requires special attention compared to powerful GPUs. But winning the GPU race remains a priority to stay competitive.

“The rise of artificial intelligence has been caused by three factors: The development of technology, the increase in the amount of data production, the development and renewal of algorithms, and the emergence of the current generation of artificial intelligence has entered a new transition period.” Park Yong-in is the chairman of Samsung Electronics.

Samsung’s goal is to increase the artificial intelligence on the device. Here, most operations are performed locally, with a selective connection to the cloud made only when absolutely necessary. Yong-in says Samsung is developing new semiconductors mainly aimed at implementing local artificial intelligence.

Using this framework, Park also talked about Exynos 2400, the processor that the Samsung Galaxy S24 family will probably include. It has been confirmed that this processor will be installed in next year’s phones, and only the S family fits into this semiconductor framework.

According to Samsung, this processor has 1.7 times better CPU performance compared to the Exynos 2200 and 14.7 times better performance in terms of artificial intelligence thanks to the new NPU. The performance of the GPU is reaching such a point that they dare to say “it will be better than its competitors”. Without mentioning Apple directly but leaving the ball at the roof.

Time will tell whether Samsung will manage to resolve its competitive disadvantage against TSMC. So far the differences between the Galaxy and Qualcomm and Exynos have been pretty obvious given the efficiency of Samsung’s 4nm node. Benchmarks of the Exynos 2400 were recently leaked and on a numerical level it looks quite far from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
