Note that a recall does not mean physically sending the cars back to Tesla factories. The company will only temporarily ban its sales until it develops a fix and dealers update the software in place.
The fixes will also be delivered free of charge via an over-the-air update to owners of already purchased cars to add features that will ensure drivers remain alert when using the controversial driver assistance system.
The fix will include additional checks and warnings on top of those already available on eligible vehicles to further encourage the driver to maintain responsibility behind the wheel with Autosteer engaged; This includes keeping your hands on the steering wheel and paying attention to the road.
– says the NHTSA document. He also notes that although Autopilot (specifically the Autosteer component) has a variety of controls to keep drivers alert, they are not always enough.
The agency states that under certain conditions, when the Autosteer function is engaged, the visibility and volume of the controls may not be sufficient to prevent the driver from abusing the driver assistance function. This could lead to an “increased risk of collision.”
Tesla was instructed to correct the deficiencies in the driver monitoring system. In a letter to NHTSA, the company acknowledged the order and said it would make the necessary correction.
Notification letters expected to be mailed to owners February 10, 2023. The order affects 2,031,220 vehicles, and models that enter production after December 7 will already have the update.
