PlayStation Portal, which Sony launched in November 2023 for $ 200, aimed to allow users to play PS5 games remotely over Wi-Fi.
However, Andy Nguyen and Kalle Svensson, who work on cloud security at Google, managed to exploit a software vulnerability on the device and install a PPSSPP emulator that can run PSP games from local storage.
Also known as Nguyen Streamannounced the violation bill On X, he posted a photo of the PlayStation Portal running Grand Theft Auto 3 Liberty City Stories, which was released for the original PSP (and later PS 2). He also said that he would release several videos featuring the abuse by the end of the week, but that he did not plan to make it public in the near future.
Turns out there was some special code trying to prevent the apk from loading, but I managed to bypass it – Wrote Nguyen is at X.
This hack is notable in that it shows that PlayStation Portal is more than just a streaming device and has enough processing power and storage capacity to run PSP games; experts used 6 GB of internal storage of the gadget to store emulator files and a copy of the game (there are no slots for memory cards in the device itself).
This also raises questions about the security of Sony devices and whether other hackers might find and exploit similar vulnerabilities in the future. Sony has yet to comment on the hack, but it’s likely that the company will attempt to fix the flaw and prevent further unauthorized changes to PlayStation Portal.
