Google is changing its mind. A few weeks ago, he announced that the Pixel 8 would not get the Gemini Nano. The reason they gave was “hardware limitations”. As we have already criticized in Xataka and in many media, it is an unconvincing explanation.
However, media pressure appears to be effective. Google has surrendered to the evidence and now confirmed that the Gemini Nano will finally arrive on the Pixel 8, in addition to the Pixel 8 Pro.
This is a logical decision. Both Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro share the same Tensor G3 processor. The difference is in RAM. 4GB vs 8GB. However, considering that Gemini Nano is a pocket-sized artificial intelligence, there is no technical reason why 4 GB is not enough.
Google announced this Gemini Nano will come to Pixel 8 as expected before summer. It’s expected to be in June, shortly after Google I/O 2024, Google’s already dated (May 14) developer conference.
Gemini Nano will be integrated into Android Artificial Intelligence Core. As Google announced, this feature will come to Pixel 8 along with the “next Pixel feature pack” in the next developer preview.
Artificial intelligence is slowly rolling out to the latest Android phones. Besides the Galaxy S24 and Pixel, the Gemini Nano is expected to reach more devices. “We collaborate with all processor manufacturers,” Sameer Samat, vice president of Android and Google Play ecosystem, tells Xataka. Among them is MediaTek, which indicates that Gemini Nano is expected to be significantly expanded. mobile phones could have native artificial intelligence.
“Hardware limitations” didn’t make much sense as the reason why the Gemini Nano couldn’t reach the Pixel 8. We now see Google correcting those plans and announcing a native expansion of its AI for a reference device like the Pixel 8.
