Microsoft is testing a new feature in Windows 11: it will make it easier for users to work with archives

Currently external software is still needed to create 7z and tar archives. However, Microsoft started testing within the Windows Insider early evaluation program to integrate this feature into Windows 11.

When will the creation of 7z and tar archives be available?

The timing of this feature becoming publicly available depends on the results of these tests.

We added support for creating 7ZIP and TAR archives in addition to ZIP via the context menu in Explorer,
– said Microsoft.

  • However, Microsoft has also added a new compression wizard that lets you choose more formats and specify more details.
  • The user can compress individual files using GZIP/BZIP2 or add multiple files to archives in different TAR formats with different compression settings.
  • You can now also change the compression level and data types stored in each archive.

The latest update includes several new emojis and improved interactions, in addition to archive functionality. It also contains fixes aimed at improving the overall stability of the operating system.
